Southampton striker Ben Brereton-Diaz is attracting strong Championship interest as rivals line up for his signature.
According to SportsBoom, Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion are leading the chase, with Middlesbrough also monitoring developments closely.
Championship Rivals Circle for Chile International
Brereton-Diaz, 26, has endured a mixed spell on the south coast since joining Southampton from Villarreal in July 2024 in a deal worth around £7 million. Despite being contracted until 2028, his long-term future at St Mary’s remains uncertain, with Russell Martin’s side prepared to consider offers if their valuation is met.
The forward has featured sporadically in the opening weeks of the season. He was an unused substitute in Southampton’s opening Championship win over Wrexham, started their EFL Cup victory against Northampton Town, and was again on the bench for the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town. His limited involvement has fuelled speculation that he could be moved on before the close of the transfer window.
Brereton-Diaz is no stranger to Bramall Lane, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United. During that spell he netted four goals in 17 league appearances as Chris Wilder’s side reached the play-off final, only to lose out to Sunderland. His familiarity with the Blades set-up is seen as a potential advantage in negotiations.
West Bromwich Albion, managed by Carlos Corberán, are also keen. The Baggies have started the season brightly and view the Chile international as a valuable addition to their attacking line. Middlesbrough, under new boss Rob Edwards, have made tentative enquiries and remain in the conversation should a deal materialise.
Brereton-Diaz began his career at Nottingham Forest before making his name with Blackburn Rovers, where his form earned him international recognition with Chile. To date, he has won 35 caps for his adopted nation, scoring seven goals, and remains a popular figure at international level despite struggles in domestic football.
His time at Southampton has been challenging. Last season, amid a disastrous Premier League campaign that saw the Saints go 17 games without a win, he was one of several players exiled to train with the Under-21 squad. He failed to score in 13 senior appearances for the club, which led to his loan return to Sheffield United in January.

Writer’s View
This potential transfer battle highlights both the opportunity and risk for clubs chasing promotion. Sheffield United’s previous experience with Brereton-Diaz makes them a natural contender, but West Brom’s stability under Corberán could be a significant pull. Middlesbrough’s interest reflects the demand for proven Championship forwards, even if recent form at Southampton has been underwhelming.
With Southampton open to selling, much will depend on which club is prepared to match the valuation before the deadline.
