Newport County Transfer News Emerges: More Signings Expected

Newport County boss David Hughes says further additions are being targeted before the transfer window closes.

The Exiles have already welcomed nine new faces this summer, but with 15 players having departed, recruitment is far from complete.

Hughes Eyes More Arrivals

County slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Rodney Parade against Salford City on Tuesday night, a result that left them 15th in League Two after four games under Hughes’ leadership. With one win, one draw and two defeats, the manager acknowledged the need to strengthen key areas.

“We’re looking at a number of areas to strengthen, absolutely, but it’s not easy,” said Hughes. “The chairman, Huw Jenkins, and myself, we’re speaking consistently and daily on what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to support the players we’ve already got here in the profile that we’re trying to bring in. Good players, there’s a lot of competition out there and we’re in the hunt for them.”

The comments underline Newport’s determination to act decisively in the final weeks of the window. Hughes, formerly in charge of Manchester United’s academy, has already reshaped his squad, but insists there is room for more reinforcements.

Injury Forces Midfield Re-think

One of the main drivers behind the search for fresh faces is the absence of midfielder Kai Whitmore. The youngster, who has impressed in the early part of the campaign, is set to miss up to a month with a calf problem.

“Kai Whitmore’s had a little setback with a niggle with a calf that will put him out for three or four weeks, which is disappointing because he was performing really, really well,” Hughes confirmed. “So yeah, we’re looking, we’re actively seeking some support to try to enhance and evolve what we’ve currently got.”

The Gwent club have relied heavily on experienced players such as captain Aaron Wildig, but Hughes has stressed the importance of balance across his squad. With departures leaving gaps in depth, particularly in midfield, the need for cover has become more pressing.

Writer’s View

Hughes has been clear from the outset that Newport are a work in progress, and the summer turnover in players illustrates the scale of the task. The loss of Whitmore is a blow given his form, but the manager’s proactive approach to the transfer market is encouraging.

If the club can secure one or two targeted signings before the deadline, the Exiles should be well placed to move away from the lower reaches of the table and build a platform for progress under their new boss.
