One goal this season does not cover Kyogo Furuhashi in exceptional glory, however his performances in a Blues shirt have warranted a special mention and a backing to score in this upcoming fixture. The former Stade Rennais and Celtic striker – who experienced far better fortune in a Hoops shirt – could add to his tally after a finish against Sheffield United helped progress his side to the second round of the EFL Cup.
In Birmingham’s opening day clash against Ipswich Town, Kyogo scored a controversially-deemed offside goal. A lovely chipped finish looked to have opened the scoring early on against the newly-relegated side, but the linesman flagged the 30-year-old offside and subsequently ruled the strike out. Forming an intelligent partnership with Jay Stansfield, the 22-year-old has scored in all three domestic matches so far this campaign.
The former Fulham striker has started the season efficiently for Birmingham and has translated his goalscoring knack from the third tier onto Championship performances. However, the Japan international could notch a second against Oxford as the defensive pairing of Michal Helik and Elliott Moore may prioritise the nullification of Stansfield rather than the Blues’ number 9. Having scored 86 goals in 167 appearances for Celtic, Kyogo should be expected to have a similar goal-per-game ratio this season.
Second Prediction for Birmingham City vs Oxford United – Over 2.5 goals 17/20
Surprisingly, this bet has come in as high as 17/20. With a late equaliser and winner against Blackburn Rovers in a recent 2-1 win, the Blues have seen this bet land on two occasions so far. Oxford United lost 3-2 to Hull City, seeing their defence breached too easily in the first half. If Oxford opt for a low-block against Birmingham – to nullify the threat of Stansfield and Kyogo – the midfield battle will be easily settled by Tomoki Iwata’s goalscoring capabilities.

Although there was a need for two late goals against Blackburn, Birmingham will be expected to start quickly and aggressively against Rowett’s side. Against the Blades, in a 2-1 Carabao Cup win, the West Country side were leading at half-time as well as against Nottingham Forest in a pre-season friendly. Given these two fixtures came at home this season, a trend is expected to emerge with City leading often at half-time.
On the other side, Oxford United lost 1-0 to Portsmouth on the opening weekend and Adam Segecic put Pompey ahead during the 38th minute. A 2-2 showing in the first 45 against the Tigers at the weekend didn’t result in this bet coming through, but against much stronger opposition in Birmingham, Oxford may struggle again with conceding early goals.
