Plymouth Argyle have strengthened their defensive ranks with the loan signing of Charlton Athletic centre-back Alex Mitchell.
The 23-year-old arrives on a season-long deal after a difficult start to the campaign for the Pilgrims, who have conceded 10 goals in four matches.
Mitchell Joins From Charlton
Mitchell played a key role in Charlton’s promotion from League One last season, making 31 appearances following his move from Millwall. Despite that success, he has not featured in the Championship this term and has been allowed to move in search of regular minutes.
The defender is available for Plymouth’s League One fixture against Leyton Orient on Tuesday and is expected to start, with Brendan Wiredu suspended and Julio Pleguezuelo sidelined through injury.
Head coach Tom Cleverley welcomed the addition, highlighting both Mitchell’s defensive qualities and his winning pedigree.
“He’s a really important signing for us,” Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon. “We know why we’ve lost the three league games, and that’s because we’re conceding too many goals. He’s going to help in that department.
“We’ve conceded from four set-pieces and four from direct play, and Alex will bring us that ability to deal with the basics. But he’s more than that. He had a big part in Charlton’s promotion year and it’s important he comes from a winning environment.”

More Reinforcements Possible
Cleverley, who took charge of the Pilgrims in the summer, admitted he is still seeking to strengthen his squad further. A first-choice striker remains a priority, while another central defender could also be targeted before the window closes.
“Potentially there might be another one,” he added. “That gives us the scope then to see Brendan Galloway at left-back when needed, and also Kornel Szucs at right-back when the profile fits. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw another centre-back this window.”
Plymouth have endured a difficult opening to the League One season, losing their first three games. The arrival of Mitchell is designed to bring greater stability and leadership to a backline under pressure.
Writer’s View
This signing makes a great deal of sense for Plymouth Argyle. Mitchell not only adds physical presence but also comes from a promotion-winning side, something Cleverley has been eager to emphasise in his recruitment. His immediate availability is timely given the club’s injury and suspension issues in defence, but the real question will be whether he can provide the resilience needed to halt the losing run.
If Argyle are to climb away from early struggles, Mitchell’s impact could prove pivotal in restoring defensive confidence at Home Park.
