Luton Town welcome Wigan Athletic to Kenilworth Road in midweek as both sides look to continue their positive starts to the League One season.
Our Three Predictions For Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic
- Prediction 1 – Christian Saydee To Score – 5/1
- Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 21/10
- Prediction 3 – Match To End In A Draw – 5/2
First Prediction For Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic – Christian Saydee To Score – 5/1
The 23-year-old was seen as a promising signing from Portsmouth this summer and has finally begun to deliver on that with his first goal of the season against Peterborough United on the weekend. Whilst rotation in midweek may mean his place in the team against Luton isn’t guaranteed, Saydee is a likely starter alongside either Dara Costelloe or Paul Mullin. He had two good opportunities against the Posh at home, one being his headed goal, but with Town’s frailties exposed against Bradford City, the Wigan attack, supported by lead playmaker Fraser Murray, will have ample opportunities to do the same.
Second Prediction For Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 21/10
Both sides have strong attacks and with back threes being the staple defence of both of these sides, chances could come from out wide in this game. Wigan’s attack has Saydee and Murray, but Luton do have talent of their own in Jerry Yates and Elijah Adebayo, alongside depth in players like Nahki Wells, who failed to make the squad against his former side in Bradford at the weekend. Town and Wigan have had bad days at the office so far this season against the Bantams and Leyton Orient, respectively, which will give encouragement to the opposing attacks.
Third Prediction For Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic – Match To End In A Draw – 5/2
However, with the quality on display, there may not be much to separate these sides. A second straight week of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday football may cause rotation in these squads and hand many players their first appearances or starts of the season, which could see mistakes creep in. A home advantage could help Luton bounce back from defeat on the weekend, but under Ryan Lowe, Wigan have looked a changed side from last season and will be much more pragmatic in their approach. Either side could clinch it convincingly but on paper this will be a very even match.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head
Luton Town come into this clash having lost their last two games in league and cup, nullifying their promising start to life back in League One under Matt Bloomfield. After wins over AFC Wimbledon in the season opener and Peterborough United the following week, the Hatters were dumped out of the EFL Cup at the hands of Coventry City despite a valiant effort on the road. However, they were handed a tough blow away to Bradford City on Saturday with a 2-1 loss. Errors from the defence allowed the Bantams to take a 2-0 lead and could have been more if City had been more clinical, and despite late hope through Gideon Kodua, Town could not claw back a point in West Yorkshire. Town will still be without defender Christ Massoko as he will serve the final game of his three-game suspension.
Wigan Athletic have had a strong and steady start to their season, showing promise of a much-improved league performance than recent seasons. Under Ryan Lowe, they have won three and lost just once in their opening four fixtures. That loss came in the second game of the season, being well off of the pace of Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road. Unlike their hosts, the Latics will head into the second round of the EFL Cup after beating Notts County, facing Stockport County at home. Their weekend game saw them defeat Peterborough United 2-0, holding firm against sustained pressure from Darren Ferguson’s side. This has been done despite injuries stacking up already, with James Carragher and Dion Rankine just two of the five players ruled out of the game against Peterborough.
These two sides have been regular opponents up until recently, with six games played since 2019. Their last match was in the Championship during Luton’s unlikely promotion season, with Rob Edwards’ side winning 2-0 on the road. That was the last of four games played that season between these sides, with the pair also playing twice in the FA Cup third round. Wigan won the first league game, whilst a draw in the cup led to a replay, which Town won 2-1 in Lancashire. The reverse fixture will be played in February.
Carl Brook will referee this match, which will be his fourth of the season. He has already refereed in League One this campaign, overseeing Exeter City‘s 4-1 win over Blackpool. His most recent match was an EFL Cup first-round game, with Barnsley overcoming Fleetwood Town on penalties. He has handed out seven yellow cards and no red cards.
