Sheffield Wednesday edged past Bolton Wanderers in a dramatic penalty shootout to book a mouthwatering Carabao Cup second-round clash with Leeds United.
The Owls, who fielded a youthful line-up, saw off League One opposition after a pulsating 3-3 draw at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Owls Hold Nerve After Late Drama
Wednesday’s night began brightly when 20-year-old Gui Siqueira marked his first professional goal with a stunning long-range strike inside eight minutes. Bolton’s task became harder on 27 minutes as defender Sam Inwood was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Charlie McNeill, but the home side quickly responded.
Jordi Osei-Tutu headed in at the far post on 36 minutes, only for Ike Ugbo to restore Wednesday’s lead less than a minute later with a composed finish – his first goal in almost a year.
Despite the man disadvantage, Bolton refused to fade. Thierry Gale levelled the tie in the 77th minute with a low drive, but debutant Reece Johnson put Wednesday back ahead just three minutes later, turning in Oskar Kobacki’s cross.
However, in added time, Brighton loanee Amario Cozier-Duberry produced a superb curling effort to take the tie to penalties.
From there, Northern Ireland Under-21 international Pierce Charles became the hero. The 20-year-old goalkeeper saved spot-kicks from Aaron Morley and Max Conway, allowing veteran Liam Palmer to calmly convert the decisive penalty and seal a 4-2 shootout triumph.

Positive Lift For Troubled Owls
The win provided a much-needed boost for Henrik Pedersen’s side after a turbulent summer that saw player wages delayed for three consecutive months. Earlier in the day, Sheffield City Council confirmed the prohibition notice on Hillsborough’s North Stand had been lifted, meaning supporters can return for Saturday’s Championship fixture against Stoke City.
Pedersen’s starting XI included nine players aged 21 or under, and the young side again impressed after Sunday’s narrow defeat to Leicester City. The performance and result offered encouragement to a fanbase that has endured an uncertain off-field situation.
Bolton, who have taken three points from their opening two League One matches, will look to respond when they travel to Barnsley this weekend. Ian Evatt’s men showed resilience despite playing over an hour with ten men, pushing their higher-tier opponents all the way.
For Wednesday, attention now turns to the high-profile Yorkshire derby against Leeds United in the second round. The tie will take place at Hillsborough, offering Pedersen’s youthful squad the chance to test themselves against Premier League opposition.
Writer’s View
This result felt like a rare moment of optimism for Sheffield Wednesday in what has been a challenging period on and off the pitch. The blend of academy talent and experienced figures delivered a resilient performance that bodes well for the season ahead.
Charles’ heroics in goal underlined the value of young players taking their opportunities, while the return of fans to the North Stand adds a timely lift. Leeds will be a huge test in the next round, but for now, this was a night to savour.
