Queens Park Rangers Linked Striker ‘Open’ To Championship Move

Michail Antonio is open to a Championship move as he looks to keep his World Cup 2026 ambitions alive, according to a report from SportsBoom.

The free agent striker is weighing up offers from home and abroad following his release by West Ham United earlier this summer.

Antonio Weighing His Options

The 35-year-old, capped by Jamaica, is said to favour remaining in England but has not ruled out the possibility of moving overseas. Talks have taken place with several interested clubs, with Italian Serie A side Sampdoria among those to have made contact with his representatives.

Earlier in the window, Queens Park Rangers were credited with an interest before turning their attention to signing Richard Kone from Wycombe Wanderers. Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked, although the financial package required could prove a significant obstacle.

Antonio, who left the London Stadium just eight months after a serious car crash, has been offered the use of West Ham’s training and medical facilities to aid his recovery. He returned to action for Jamaica earlier this summer and scored twice on his comeback for the Hammers’ under-21s before his departure.

Proven Record But Fitness Questions

A powerful and physical forward, Antonio became West Ham’s record Premier League goal scorer during his decade at the club, netting 68 top-flight goals. He also played a key role in their UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in 2023.

However, questions remain over his sharpness and durability following the broken leg sustained last year. Clubs considering a move must weigh his experience and proven track record against the challenge of managing a 35-year-old striker returning from long-term injury.

Antonio himself has no doubts over his ability to make an impact, telling reporters:

“I’ve got a lot left in me. I’ve got something to prove to show that I can come back.”

Writer’s View

Interest in Antonio underlines the demand for proven goalscorers in the Championship, particularly those with a physical presence capable of unsettling defences. While his injury history and age are genuine concerns, his scoring record and winning mentality make him an intriguing option for clubs chasing promotion or in need of a focal point.

The financial terms will ultimately determine whether a move materialises, but if fit and motivated, Antonio could be one of the most impactful free signings of the season.
