Kevin Nolan wants Northampton Town to embrace the challenge of facing Championship promotion favourites Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
The Cobblers host Will Still’s side at Sixfields tonight in what their manager describes as a “great opportunity” to test themselves against top-level opposition.
Big Test for Northampton Against Saints
Relegated from the Premier League last season, Southampton arrive in the East Midlands boasting a squad rich in quality and depth. Under Still’s guidance, they are tipped to challenge strongly for an immediate return to the top flight, making them one of the toughest possible first-round opponents.
For Nolan, who is looking to improve Town’s recent record in cup competitions, the tie represents both a daunting task and a valuable benchmark for his squad.
“We couldn’t have asked for a tougher game, could we? But it’s an exciting one and it’s a good chance for the lads to test themselves against players who were in the Premier League last season,” he said. “They’re a great club with great facilities and they’re expected to be at the top end of the Championship. This is the type of game I would have loved as a player and I’m now really relishing it as a manager.”

Focus on Performance and Attitude
Nolan is keen to see his players rise to the occasion, regardless of the result.
“Cup competitions are important to me. The draw could have been a lot kinder but we have to lick our lips and look at it as a great opportunity. There’s no pressure on us. They’re expected to win but the minimum I expect is hard work and I want to see our lads applying themselves in the right way and giving a good account of themselves – let’s show people we can compete against a top team.”
With three league matches to come in quick succession, the Cobblers boss is likely to rotate his squad, although injuries may limit the extent of his changes. He stressed the importance of balancing the cup tie with the demands of the league campaign, particularly with two midweek fixtures in the next fortnight.
“It’s going to be a test for the lads because they’ll need to go again,” Nolan added. “It’s a big couple of weeks with two midweek games and we’re expecting to pick up points and give a good account of ourselves in the cup. We’ll be giving everything we’ve got to try and win the game and get into the next round.”
Writer’s View
Northampton face a significant challenge against a side widely tipped to return to the Premier League, but this fixture could provide more than just a result. A strong performance, even in defeat, would reinforce the Cobblers’ growing confidence under Nolan and showcase their ability to compete with higher-level opposition.
With cup runs often helping to build momentum, Town will hope to turn this daunting draw into a springboard for the weeks ahead.
