Southend United boss Kevin Maher has moved to clarify that Oli Coker’s absence from the matchday squad against Gateshead was not connected to ongoing transfer speculation.
The midfielder had been linked with a move to Peterborough United earlier in the summer, but Maher insisted selection decisions were the only factor in Saturday’s omission.
Coker, 22, has been the subject of interest from the League One side, with a bid reported to have been turned down last month. The Southend academy graduate, under contract until the end of the 2025–26 season, has made 74 appearances for his boyhood club and scored 12 goals.
Selection Call, Not Transfer Issue
When asked if the Peterborough rumours influenced his decision, Maher’s answer was short and direct: “No.” The Shrimpers boss revealed that Coker was one of several players left out of the 18, alongside Cav Miley and Slavi Spasov.
“The hardest thing today was leaving people out of the squad,” Maher said. “It’s the hardest part of the job and it hurts me to have to disappoint people.”
Coker’s absence came as Southend suffered defeat on the opening day of the National League season, with Maher facing a balancing act as he manages competition for places across the squad.

Summer Transfer Context
The midfielder’s name first appeared in the summer transfer headlines in July, when Peterborough United were linked with a move. It was understood the Posh had a bid rejected as they explored midfield reinforcements ahead of the new campaign. Coker, who played in Southend’s play-off final defeat to Oldham at Wembley last season, was highlighted as a target with EFL pedigree.
However, Maher’s comments now make clear that the weekend’s team selection was purely tactical, rather than a sign of imminent movement.
Writer’s View
This is an important clarification for Southend supporters. Given the summer’s speculation, Coker’s absence could easily have been read as a transfer hint, but Maher’s insistence that it was a footballing decision should ease fears of an immediate departure.
Still, with Peterborough’s interest documented and the midfielder entering the final two years of his deal, this is a situation worth monitoring as the window progresses. For now, it appears Coker’s future remains firmly at Roots Hall.
