Northampton Town vs Southampton: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (12/08)

League One side Northampton Town play host to Championship side Southampton in the first round of the Carabao Cup at Sixfields on Tuesday.

Our Three Predictions for Northampton Town vs Southampton

  • First Prediction: Southampton to win – 23/50
  • Second Prediction: Under 3.5 goals to be scored – 2/5
  • Third Prediction: Both teams to score – 3/4

First Prediction for Northampton Town vs Southampton – Southampton to win – 23/50

This game is a good opportunity for both sides to rotate and experiment with new formations and tactics. Although you’d expect a rotated XI from the Championship outfit, on paper, they are still much stronger than League One’s Northampton, who have had a tricky start to life in the third tier this season. A 3-1 away loss against Wigan Athletic was followed up by a 0-0 draw against recently promoted Bradford City, whilst their opponents opened their campaign with a last-minute win over newly promoted Hollywood side Wrexham. This tie is between one side that will be gunning for promotion back to the Premier League after relegation last season. and a team looking to avoid relegation to the fourth tier of English football, meaning the visitors are likely to make it through to the second round in this matchup.

Second Prediction for Northampton Town vs Southampton – Under 3.5 goals to be scored – 2/5

It’s fair to say that Kevin Nolan’s side haven’t had the best, nor the most exciting, start to life in the third tier this season. A 3-1 loss away at Wigan was followed by a goalless draw at home last weekend against Bradford, whilst Will Still’s side took all three points against Welsh side Wrexham, in dramatic fashion, but not with an exciting, high-scoring scoreline. Neither side was involved in a game last weekend that saw over 3.5 goals or more scored, and with rotated 11’s, mixed with the fact that we are still in the early days of both sides’ seasons, it is unlikely that this match will be a high-scoring encounter.

Third Prediction for Northampton Town vs Southampton – Both teams to score – 3/4

However, on the contrary, the Saints have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches, including last weekend’s Championship opener, whilst Northampton have conceded 12 goals in their last seven games, despite keeping a clean sheet last weekend. The hosts have also managed to score four goals in their last three games, three of which came in a pre-season friendly against Championship side Birmingham City, whilst Southampton have scored five goals in their last three games, and 10 goals in total across their pre-season campaign and last weekend. Despite neither side having the best goalscoring record, both sides’ poor defensive records and expected rustiness in shape defensively as a result of the game coming so fast into the season may result in both sides scoring despite the fact that the game is shaping up to be a rather low-scoring affair.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, the visitors have started their season better than their opponents, winning dramatically against Wrexham last weekend, whilst Northampton have lost one and drawn one.

Both sides will have different ambitions in their respective leagues for the upcoming season, the Cobblers looking to climb the table after a poor 2024/25 season, whilst the Saints will be looking for an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season, however, a strong run in a cup competition wouldn’t go amiss with the potential reward of a big tie and prize money.

Throughout history, these sides have met each other 59 times, but none of these clashes have occurred since 2009, when the tie took place in the FA Cup. In total, the visitors have generally got the better of their opponents, winning 31 of the 59 matches, whilst Northampton have won 19 times. The other nine ties have ended level at full-time. The clash in 2009 ended 3-2 to the Saints at Sixfields, with goals from Adam Lallana, Papa Waigo N’Diaye and Dean Hammond ruling out an own goal from Hammond and a Ryan Gilligan penalty.
