Blackpool were forced to delay Dale Taylor’s debut after a registration issue ruled the striker out of Saturday’s defeat to Exeter City.
The 21-year-old joined the Seasiders from Nottingham Forest last week for a reported £1 million fee but was unable to feature in the 4-1 loss at St James Park.
Taylor travelled with the squad to Devon and had been expected to make his first appearance under Steve Bruce. However, an administrative error meant the paperwork was not completed in time for the fixture, prompting frustration from the Blackpool boss.
Bruce Unhappy with EFL Response
Bruce revealed the problem had been identified on Friday afternoon, leaving the club scrambling to resolve the matter before kick-off. The Seasiders manager was highly critical of the EFL’s handling of the situation.
“Look, we’ve made a mistake, and unfortunately it wasn’t to be. We found out about it Friday afternoon around four or five o’clock – we knew there was a bit of a problem. I have to say the EFL were atrocious in their handling of the situation in my honest opinion.
“Yes, we made a mistake but we did everything we possibly could to rectify it. They didn’t really want to know. It was as if they just shut up shop and disappeared for the weekend – which left a bad taste in my mouth because somebody could’ve made a decision.”

Club Statement
Ahead of kick-off, Blackpool issued a statement to explain the situation to supporters. It confirmed that the club accepted full responsibility and outlined steps to avoid a repeat.
“Blackpool Football Club can confirm that Dale Taylor will miss today’s fixture against Exeter City due to a minor registration issue. The club takes full responsibility for this delay, and is as frustrated as everyone will be that the player will not be able to make his debut this afternoon.
“This mistake is not attributable to any one individual and the club has adjusted its procedures to ensure that a mistake such as this will not happen again. The club thanks supporters for their continued support and understanding and hopes to give those travelling three memorable points on the road to kick start the season.”
Taylor’s absence compounded a difficult afternoon for the Seasiders, who were comfortably beaten in Devon. The Northern Ireland international will now target his debut in the coming fixtures as Bruce looks to integrate his new signing quickly.
Writer’s View
While paperwork delays are rare at this level, they can have an impact both on team plans and morale. Blackpool’s swift acceptance of responsibility is the right approach, but the incident also underlines the need for robust internal checks.
For Taylor, this is only a minor setback in what could be a long and productive spell at Bloomfield Road. The striker’s arrival is a significant investment, and fans will be eager to see him in action as soon as possible.
