Birmingham City are considering a move for Montpellier HSC’s Tanguy Coulibaly as Chris Davies looks to strengthen his attacking options before the transfer deadline.
The 24-year-old winger has emerged as a target after the St. Andrew’s side opened their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town.
While the performance was encouraging, Birmingham’s lack of depth in wide positions remains a concern, prompting interest in the former PSG academy player.

Coulibaly on the radar
French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter reports that Birmingham are showing strong interest in Coulibaly, who is under contract at Montpellier until summer 2026. The Ligue 1 side’s relegation last season, coupled with his deal entering its final year, could open the door for a move before the window closes on 1 September.
Coulibaly joined VfB Stuttgart in 2019, making 74 appearances in Germany’s top tier and contributing six goals and three assists. He moved to Montpellier in December 2023, scoring four times and providing one assist in 45 appearances. Despite their drop to Ligue 2, he remains a regular at the Stade de la Mosson.

Why Birmingham want him
Birmingham’s wide areas lack cover beyond first-choice options. Keshi Anderson impressed on the left against Ipswich, while Demarai Gray operated on the right, but alternative specialist wingers are scarce. Willum Thor Willumsson is more comfortable centrally and Scott Wright’s time at the club has been disrupted by injury.
Adding Coulibaly would not only provide competition for starting roles but also inject pace and top-flight experience into Davies’ squad. The Frenchman’s ability to play on either flank could give Birmingham greater tactical flexibility as they aim to mount a promotion challenge.
Writer’s View
This link makes sense for Birmingham. Coulibaly fits the mould of a winger who could thrive in the Championship: quick, technically sound, and with experience at a high level. With Montpellier relegated and his contract situation potentially making him available for a reasonable fee, the deal could be a shrewd piece of late-window business.
However, securing him will depend on whether Birmingham are prepared to move swiftly in what remains a competitive transfer market. If they want to sustain their promotion ambitions, adding proven quality in wide areas feels essential.
