Coventry City vs Luton Town: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (12/08)

Championship side Coventry City play host to League One side Luton Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday.

Our Three Predictions for Coventry City vs Luton Town

  • First Prediction: Coventry City to win – 17/20
  • Second Prediction: Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 19/20
  • Third Prediction: Ellis Simms to score at any time – 12/5

First Prediction for Coventry City vs Luton Town – Coventry City to win – 17/20

Although Coventry haven’t started their league campaign as they would’ve liked on the weekend, this game is a good opportunity to get certain players up to speed and experiment with tactics and formations whilst still playing at a high level. Luton have started life back in League One well, winning two games out of two, after suffering back-to-back relegations last season. However, Matt Bloomfield is likely to make a host of changes, which may indicate that his focus is mainly on the league this season, alongside the fact that Luton have played one more league game than their opponents. The Championship, certainly in recent seasons, has proved to be a much tougher league than League One, meaning that the side that’s in the higher division, Coventry, is likely to make it through to the next round in this tie.

Second Prediction for Coventry City vs Luton Town – Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 19/20

Neither side has had an exciting start to life in their league campaigns, the Sky Blues’ game on Saturday ending in a goalless draw, whilst Luton are yet to concede a league goal in the two matches they’ve played. Whilst the Sky Blues struggled in front of goal against the Tigers, their opponents have scored three goals, one of which was an own goal against AFC Wimbledon, but have yet to see their new strikers hit the ground running. Frank Lampard’s side have made crucial defensive additions, including goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and versatile defender Kaine Kesler-Hayden to the squad, which helped limit Hull to just three shots on target. Both sides’ recent defensive strengths, alongside the fact that the hosts haven’t managed to score this season yet, alongside all the stats are pointing to this game being a low-scoring affair.

Third Prediction for Coventry City vs Luton Town – Ellis Simms to score at any time – 12/5

It’s fair to say that striker Ellis Simms didn’t have a great season last season, scoring just six league goals in 43 Championship games. However, the season before that, the 24-year-old did prove he could score goals at this level after moving to the Midlands for a substantial seven-figure fee from Premier League side Everton. In 2023/24, Simms scored 19 goals in 53 games, 13 of which came in the league, and the club will be hoping he can hit those figures again as the side aim for promotion to the Premier League. After scoring in the last pre-season friendly against German side St. Pauli, Simms did not come off the bench on the weekend, but will be hoping he can get his season started quickly if given the chance to start on Tuesday.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both sides have got their seasons underway relatively well, the hosts being held to a 0-0 draw by Hull City whilst Luton have picked up back-to-back league wins against AFC Wimbledon and Peterborough United.

Both sides will be looking to be in the top half of their respective leagues, with both sides no doubt aiming towards promotion. However, a strong cup run in the Carabao Cup wouldn’t go amiss either, with the prospect of a big tie and prize money up for grabs.

Since 2017, these sides have met each other 13 times, with matches coming in the Championship, League One and League Two in recent years. The majority of these ties have ended in draws, six out of the 13 matches ending level at full time, whilst the Hatters have won five, meaning Coventry have won just two. The most recent matchup between these sides came in April, Luton winning 1-0 at Kenilworth Road thanks to a goal from midfielder Shandon Baptiste after both sides went down to 10 men.
