Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the return of Wales international Charlie Crew on a season-long loan from Leeds United.
Crew, 19, impressed during the second half of last season after joining Rovers in January. He featured 13 times during a promotion-winning run that saw Grant McCann’s side storm to the League Two title with four consecutive victories to close the campaign.
Having enjoyed his first taste of consistent senior football, the midfielder has now agreed to return for the club’s League One campaign.
Speaking to the club website, Crew said the move was an easy decision:
“I’m really excited to be back and I can’t wait to get started. Last season was a successful time for the six months that I was here. I know the staff, I know the players and I know the fans. At the end of the day, it was an offer that I couldn’t turn down.”
Crew joined Leeds from Cardiff City in 2022 and signed a four-year deal at Elland Road last summer. He made his senior debut in a Championship fixture against Plymouth Argyle in November 2024 and has since been involved in first-team training under Daniel Farke. Despite interest from several League One clubs, both Leeds and the player have opted for continuity and familiarity.
McCann Keen To Get Deal Done
Rovers manager Grant McCann was keen to get the deal done early and admitted the club had been pursuing Crew since the final whistle at Notts County on the last day of last season.
“Charlie is highly thought of at Leeds. He’s been around their pre-season programme, played in some of the games and went away on the trip with them so we had to be patient to get him,” said McCann. “I’m delighted that he’s chosen us because there were some big clubs in League One chasing him.”
Crew will wear the number 18 shirt once again and joins a squad featuring former Leeds players Robbie Gotts and Billy Sharp. His return is another signal of intent from Doncaster, who are looking to build on last season’s momentum as they make the step up into League One.

Writer’s View
Doncaster have pulled off a clever piece of business by securing Charlie Crew for a second time. He already knows the squad and coaching staff, and his presence in midfield will provide stability during a transitional year in League One. From Leeds United’s perspective, sending Crew back to a familiar environment under a manager who trusts him is ideal for development.
For the player himself, the move offers consistent first-team football at a higher level without the need to settle into new surroundings. It is a loan that suits all three parties and could pay significant dividends over the coming months.
