Walsall are set to bolster their forward options with the loan signing of Burnley striker Michael Mellon, as Mat Sadler looks to build on a positive start to the League Two season.
The 21-year-old Scotland Under-21 international appears poised to join the Saddlers after spending the second half of last season on loan at Bradford City.
Mellon Poised for Saddlers Switch
The potential move would mark Mellon’s fifth loan spell away from Turf Moor. He previously enjoyed productive stints with Morecambe and Dundee, but has struggled to replicate his goalscoring form in recent months. Last season saw him make limited impact at Stockport County before his run with the Bantams, where he registered two goals and two assists in 15 appearances, mostly from the bench.
According to reports, Walsall are leading the race to secure Mellon’s services, and his arrival would add to a busy summer of transfer activity at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Strength in Numbers Up Front
Should the deal go through, Mellon would join a competitive front line already featuring Aaron Pressley, Jonny Stuttle, Josh Gordon and Jamille Matt. Pressley arrived on a permanent deal from Stevenage, while Stuttle is currently on loan from Bournemouth. The addition of Mellon would provide a fifth option in attack for Sadler’s preferred 3-1-4-2 formation.
However, with Burnley likely to expect meaningful game time for their young forward, the challenge for Walsall will be ensuring Mellon is more than just a depth option. The move could prove pivotal for a player looking to regain the form that saw him score 15 goals in 27 appearances for Morecambe during the first half of the 2023–24 season.
That form failed to translate during subsequent spells in Scotland and League One, but Walsall may offer a platform for consistency and development.
Another Step in Sadler’s Rebuild
The loan deal, if finalised, would be Walsall’s 12th addition of the summer. Veteran defender Aden Flint has been one of the standout acquisitions, alongside a raft of new faces across the pitch as Sadler attempts to mount a serious promotion challenge.
The Saddlers opened their campaign with a spirited 2–1 win over Swindon Town despite playing the majority of the match with ten men. Goals from Evan Weir and Connor Barrett secured three points and an early top-four spot heading into the second round of fixtures.
Writer’s View
Michael Mellon’s career is at a critical juncture, and a move to Walsall could be the ideal environment to rebuild momentum. With a strong support cast, regular minutes and a manager who believes in youth development, Mellon may find League Two to be the right stage to rediscover his Morecambe form. For Walsall, the move makes sense tactically and logistically—if the striker hits the ground running, he could be a crucial cog in Sadler’s promotion push.
