They’re the favourites with many football bookmakers for relegation this season, but new boss David Hughes is keen to build on Newport County’s opening day draw with Notts County.
The Exiles manager is keen to add reinforcements as his side drew 1-1 with the Magpies on the opening day of the League Two campaign.
Hughes Wants More Than Just Numbers
Hughes says the club are actively working to bring in further players before the end of the transfer window, with a clear emphasis on quality over quantity.
Hehas already been busy in the market, adding goalkeeper duo Nik Tzanev and Jordan Wright, central defender Lee Jenkins, Welsh international Matt Smith in midfield, and striker Ged Garner, who marked his league debut with a goal. Manchester United’s Habeeb Ogunneye and Cardiff City forward Michael Reindorf have also joined on loan.
But speaking after the opening fixture, Hughes confirmed the club is still looking to strengthen.
“It’s not easy. There’s a number of factors, obviously a number of clubs who will be looking at individuals as well. So we are looking to add some further numbers and not just numbers, but they’ve got to be quality. The conversations we’ve had with the chairman have always been positive.”
Promising Start Despite Late Equaliser
Saturday’s clash at Rodney Parade began under unusual circumstances, with kick-off delayed until 16:00 BST following a medical incident involving a supporter. Once play got underway, Newport grew into the game and struck early in the second half. Summer signing Ged Garner rose highest to head in from close range on 49 minutes, capping an encouraging debut performance.
However, their lead was short-lived. A foul on Matthew Dennis saw Jodi Jones equalise from the spot for Notts County just 15 minutes later. The home side almost responded immediately, as loanee Reindorf struck the post amid penalty-box chaos.
Despite the draw, Hughes praised his players’ overall display and believes the match provided a strong foundation for what lies ahead.
“When you go 1-0 up at home you want to try and see the game out. What I’ve got to say is we’ve played against a very, very, very good Notts County team and you can see why they’ll be the favourites to be one of the top two or three in the league.”
Writer’s View
David Hughes appears to have struck the right tone in the early stages of Newport County’s rebuild. With the spine of the team taking shape and early signs of promise against a strong Notts County side, further signings could help elevate the Exiles into the mix for a top-half push.
Recruitment has been sensible so far, and if the final additions match the ambition shown, Newport may yet spring a surprise in League Two this season.
