Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of midfielder Djibril Soumare, with the Braga man set to arrive in England ahead of a potential loan move.
The 22-year-old is expected to undergo a medical shortly, with the Blades hoping to finalise terms in time for their final pre-season fixture.
Soumare Arrival Edges Closer
Ruben Selles has made no secret of his desire to bolster his midfield options following a disruptive summer that has seen Vini Souza depart and injuries rule out Tom Davies, Jamie Shackleton and Oliver Arblaster for the start of the campaign.
Soumare, a Senegal U23 international, has been identified as the club’s top target. The Braga midfielder is set to join initially on loan, with an option to make the deal permanent should United secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Administrative hurdles had delayed Soumare’s arrival, with post-Brexit red tape complicating work permit applications. However, United now believe the final formalities are close to completion, and the player’s arrival in the UK is expected imminently.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Soumare has emerged from Braga’s system as a composed, technically sound operator. He earned his first international call-up in 2022 and has featured in qualification matches for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Blades Midfield Rebuild In Full Swing
Sheffield United’s midfield rebuild has become a priority due to both injuries and departures. With Souza sold to Wolfsburg and several key names sidelined, Selles has had to act decisively.
Soumare is not the only player on the radar. United have also tracked Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, and it remains to be seen whether both deals will be pursued simultaneously or if Soumare’s imminent arrival brings that chase to an end.
Defensive issues have also emerged, with three centre-backs: Jack Robinson, Anel Ahmedhodzic, and Tyler Bindon, all absent from the recent friendly in Nice due to illness and injury. United remain active in the market for reinforcements at the back, but financial balance will be needed, especially if key assets like Gustavo Hamer are sold before the window closes.
A behind-closed-doors match against Fulham this weekend could serve as Soumare’s first involvement if his registration is processed in time, though the coaching staff are also focused on getting him fully integrated for the league opener against Bristol City.
Writer’s View
This deal signals ambition and smart squad planning from Sheffield United. Soumare may not yet be a household name, but his profile fits Selles’ pressing need for energy, presence and passing range in midfield. The loan-to-buy model adds flexibility in a tight financial climate, and if the Senegalese talent adapts quickly, he could become a mainstay in United’s push for promotion. With multiple midfielders sidelined and key defensive absences persisting, his arrival could not come at a more crucial time.
