Milton Keynes Dons are considering an approach for Wrexham attacker Ollie Palmer, who is expected to leave the Championship outfit in the coming weeks.
The 33-year-old joined the Red Dragons in January 2022 in what was a club record deal at the time. It represented another huge coup for the Hollywood backed outfit, with Palmer opting to swap League One football for the National League.
He went on to score 15 goals in 22 appearances during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign as Wrexham narrowly missed out on promotion. However, Palmer flourished the following season alongside Paul Mullin, hitting the back of the net 17 times as they secured the National League title.
Similar success followed in League Two, although the former Lincoln City striker did find himself on the fringes of the squad at times. Despite that, he still featured 39 times as the Welsh-based side secured back-to-back promotions.
Palmer began last season in the starting lineup and missed just one league game up until the end of January. However, he suffered a similar fate to Mullin following the arrivals of Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith, failing to make a matchday squad for the remainder of the campaign.
Palmer ‘Offered To Multiple Teams’
With Wrexham about to embark on life in the Championship and a bid for a historic fourth successive promotion, it is clear that Palmer will be collateral damage. Mullin has already joined Wigan Athletic on loan, with his colleague set to follow out the door.
The ex-Luton Town loanee still has a year remaining on his contract, meaning he could also depart on a temporary deal. According to The Wrexham Insider, the forward has been offered to a number of clubs, with Milton Keynes Dons one of those considering an approach.
The Dons are the heavy favourites to secure a place in League One by next May. They first brought in Paul Warne to replace Scott Lindsey in April, a move which was seen as significant at the time after the 52-year-old guided Derby County to the Championship in 2024.
This has seen several high-profile arrivals this summer, including the likes of Nathaniel Mendiz-Laing, Callum Patterson, Aaron Collins and Gethin Jones. It is likely that they will face League One competition for Palmer’s signature, although they will be confident of winning that battle should they proceed with their interest.
Writer’s View
There’s little doubt that Palmer would be a quality addition for any League Two side, but it’s difficult to see him making the move to MK Dons. They have already brought in three strikers this summer in Patterson, Collins and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and bringing in another could create disharmony. Furthermore, Palmer is likely to want to move to a club where he will be considered a first team regular, which isn’t something that Paul Warne could guarantee. Expect the 33-year-old to move elsewhere.
