Northampton Town Make Move For 14-Goal Forward

Accrington Stanley are bracing themselves for a bid battle after receiving an approach from Northampton Town for star forward Tyler Walton.

The League Two side are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old, who played a crucial role in their survival last season.

Northampton Target Goal Threat Walton

Walton arrived at Accrington last summer from Southport and quickly adapted to life in the EFL, scoring nine goals and supplying eight assists in all competitions. His tally of 14 League Two goal contributions was second only to Ben Woods, underlining his value to manager John Doolan’s side.

While Walton did miss a number of chances – 13 big opportunities went begging – he still ranked top for big chances created at the Wham Stadium, proving to be not just a finisher but also a key creative outlet.

His form has now caught the eye of League One outfit Northampton Town, who are reportedly the first to table an official offer. The Cobblers narrowly avoided relegation from the third tier last season and are looking to bolster a misfiring frontline that managed just 48 league goals. New boss Kevin Nolan has already overseen a major rebuild this summer, with over ten permanent arrivals.

Walton, who previously played for York City, remains under contract at Accrington and is seen as central to their hopes of pushing up the table. Sources close to the club suggest the initial bid from Northampton is likely to be rejected, although it remains to be seen whether they will return with an improved offer.

Stanley’s firm stance is understandable. Despite their flirtation with relegation last season, they have managed to keep their core group intact over the summer. With a full pre-season behind them and a relatively stable squad, Doolan will be hoping to steer them clear of trouble and into mid-table safety this time around.

Accrington kick off their League Two campaign at home against Gillingham and will be desperate to start with three points. Whether Walton will still be part of that squad remains uncertain, but any exit would undoubtedly weaken the side just days before the season begins.

Writer’s View

This feels like a test of ambition for Accrington Stanley. Tyler Walton might not be the most polished finisher in the division, but his numbers speak for themselves. He is a dual threat, capable of both scoring and creating, and losing him now would punch a hole in Stanley’s attacking plans.

Northampton’s interest makes sense given their lack of firepower, but unless the offer is significantly upped, you can understand why Accrington would turn it down. Holding firm here might send a message that the club is aiming higher than another relegation scrap.
