Hull City are close to securing the signing of experienced winger David Akintola, with the Nigerian set to join on a free transfer following his exit from Turkish side Rizespor.
The move comes as the Tigers continue their push to strengthen ahead of the new Championship season, despite operating under an ongoing EFL transfer sanction.
Tigers Target Akintola to Solve Winger Crisis
Akintola, 29, is understood to have rejected a contract offer from Gençlerbirliği in favour of a move to England, and Hull are now working to finalise terms subject to EFL approval. The winger would provide much-needed cover on the flanks, with first-choice duo Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi still sidelined with ACL injuries.
Last season, Akintola played 32 times in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring three goals and assisting six more. He also featured in the Turkish Cup, ending the campaign with a goal in a 5–2 win over Hatayspor from the left wing. That versatility, coupled with his experience, makes him an attractive option for Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic.
The Nigerian has a strong track record across Europe, with a career that has included spells in Norway with Rosenborg and Adana Demirspor, where he featured in Europa League and Champions League qualifying rounds. In total, he has scored 53 goals in 273 career appearances, offering both end product and a reliable wide outlet.
Hull’s squad remains short on natural wingers, with Abu Kamara currently the only senior option available heading into their opener against Coventry City. If completed in time, Akintola could go straight into the matchday squad as the Tigers aim to build on their positive pre-season momentum.
The deal would be part of a busy window at the MKM Stadium, where the club are trying to navigate EFL restrictions that currently prevent them from paying fees for permanent or loan signings. Only free agents or no-fee loans can be registered until their appeal is heard, with that outcome expected next week.
Alongside Akintola, Hull are also pursuing deals for John Lundstram and Enis Destan, both of which are believed to be at an advanced stage. Akin Famewo has been training with the squad and could also join on a free.

Writer’s View
Hull City are playing the cards they have been dealt and doing it smartly. David Akintola might not be a household name in England, but his record suggests he can be a real asset in a Championship environment. With wide players currently unavailable, this move feels both necessary and shrewd.
The EFL restrictions have made recruitment more complicated, but credit should go to the club for acting decisively. If Akintola can adapt quickly, he could play a key role in the early weeks of the season and offer something different to what the Tigers currently possess.
