Harvey Knibbs appears set for a move to Charlton Athletic as the Addicks continue an aggressive recruitment drive ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
Having joined Reading from Cambridge United in 2023, the versatile attacker has produced consistent returns, scoring 32 goals and adding 12 assists in 100 appearances across all competitions.
Despite having a year left on his current deal, Knibbs has been at the centre of mounting interest from several Championship clubs. Portsmouth, Derby County and Oxford United were all credited with admiration for the former Aston Villa youth product, but it is Charlton who have moved swiftly to finalise terms with Reading.
Speaking after Reading’s 4-0 home defeat to Portsmouth, boss Noel Hunt told the press:
“There have been talks between us and another club and unfortunately we think it’s nearly done. They’ve come to an agreement so Harvey pulled himself out of the squad, which is his right, but we’ll see what happens over the next 24 hours.”
Knibbs’ imminent exit leaves a significant gap in the Royals’ attacking arsenal, particularly after such an influential two-season spell at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. His back-to-back returns of 16 goals and six assists in all competitions have marked him out as one of the most productive forwards in the lower divisions.
Addicks’ Ambition Continues Under Nathan Jones
Charlton’s intent this summer is clear. Following their promotion via the League One play-offs, manager Nathan Jones has been heavily backed to reshape his squad ahead of the Championship campaign. The former Luton Town boss, who recently committed to a new five-year deal despite interest from Cardiff City, has already brought in Rob Apter, Reece Burke, Sonny Carey, Thomas Kaminski and Charlie Kelman among others.
Knibbs would become their ninth addition and arguably one of their most exciting. With power, technical ability and a proven eye for goal, his arrival adds further depth to a squad already being tipped to punch above its weight in the second tier.
Jones has prioritised strengthening Charlton’s attacking options, and Knibbs looks set to provide competition in a number of forward roles. His experience, versatility and finishing prowess could prove vital as the Addicks aim to avoid being drawn into a relegation battle.

Writer’s View
This looks like a canny piece of business by Charlton Athletic. In Knibbs, they are not only signing a proven League One performer but a player with the physicality and maturity to make the Championship jump. His consistent output for Reading suggests he’s more than capable of influencing games at a higher level, and his willingness to press and contribute out of possession aligns well with Nathan Jones’ intense tactical demands.
Charlton’s bold summer recruitment speaks to a club determined to learn from past mistakes and establish themselves in the second tier. Knibbs might not be a marquee name, but he could be one of the more shrewd signings of this window.
