Lincoln City attacker Jovon Makama has admitted he has been working on his long range finishing after netting a stunner in the 4-2 pre-season friendly win over West Bromwich Albion yesterday.
The 21-year-old is seen as the crown jewel of the Imps academy, having emerged as a first team regular over the past couple of years. He had come in for some stick from some of the Lincoln faithful throughout last season, but a switch to the right wing gave him a new lease of life.
He hit five goals and three assists in four games in March, including a first senior hat trick in a 5-0 win over Bristol Rovers. This saw the youngster named the League One Player of the Month and the EFL Young Player of the Month.
Makama Set For Pivotal Role
Lincoln have endured a tough summer, losing key stars Sean Roughan, Paudie O’Connor and Ethan Erhahon. Although the exits of the trio weren’t unexpected, they have so far added just two names to their squad in defenders Sonny Bradley and Ryley Towler.
This has led to concern from the stands that it could be a tough season at the LNER Stadium, although it is fair to say that Michael Skubala does have an array of attacking talent to choose from. Veteran James Collins is expected to lead the line, whilst the likes of Rob Street, Freddie Draper, Jack Moylan and Makama could all play a prominent role.

The latter showed his abilities in front of goal yesterday, hitting a brace within the first five minutes of the game. Speaking afterwards, the winger revealed he had been working on his long range finishes throughout the summer:
“I think the lads did well, from minute one we were bang at it and I think that shows with the performance and the scoreline.
“Throughout pre-season I’ve been working on my long-range finishes, so I’m really happy to see one fly into the back of the net.
“On Saturday I found myself in some good positions and I was able to pick the ball up in pockets of space, I know I have a powerful shot and I’m pleased with the second goal.”
Lincoln start their campaign next weekend when they host Reading in the season opener.
Writer’s View
Jovon Makama has emerged as one of Lincoln’s star players over the past 12 months and will be pivotal to Michael Skubala’s plans this season. He came in for a lot of unnecessary stick at times last season but got his head down to show his importance during the final few months of the campaign. This has silenced his doubters and if he continues on this rise, it is surely a matter of time before he starts attracting attention from the divisions above.
