Former Ipswich Town midfielder Massimo Luongo is undergoing a medical at Millwall ahead of a move to the Den, as per Daniel Marsh. The Lions are also interested in bringing another midfielder to the club on a permanent basis.
The 32-year-old had been on trial with Alex Neil’s side following the expiration of his contract at Ipswich earlier in the summer.
Luongo Set For Millwall Move
Luongo was one of the best midfielders in the second tier during his last stint in the Championship.
The Australian international combined with Sam Morsy to form a formidable duo in the Ipswich Town midfield, which facilitated the attacking flair of the likes of Omari Hutchinson.
He played 43 times in the league and scored three goals in the process.
Unfortunately, he was shuffled down the pecking order following the Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Premier League and the arrivals of Kalvin Phillips and Jean Lys Cajuste. The Sydney-born man played just 197 minutes of Premier League football and was sometimes left out of the matchday squad altogether.
The Lions have a gap in central midfield which needs to be filled following the departure of George Saville earlier in the summer. Saville made 49 appearances for the South London-based side in all competitions last campaign.

Millwall Looking To Make Another Addition In Midfield
Alex Neil’s squad is currently notably understaffed in the centre of the park.
Even with Luongo’s arrival, the Lions only have the Australian, Billy Mitchell and Casper de Norre as established options in central midfield, and inexperienced teenagers Alfie Massey and Daniel Kelly could provide backup if needed.
Therefore, it makes sense that they are looking to sign another central midfielder in Tottenham Hotspur man Alfie Devine.
The 20-year-old has evolved into a more attacking midfielder in recent years, but is still more than capable of performing well in a slightly deeper role.
He has experience in the Championship as he spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Plymouth Argyle, and he had a successful stint in Belgium last season, scoring six times in 30 league games for Westerlo.
Writer’s View
Luongo should be a great signing for Millwall.
He will be able to replace Saville’s experience, tenacity and box-to-box ability very easily and he also knows what it takes to win promotion from the second tier.
If the Lions could land Devine, it would give them a very complete midfield full of experience, running power and technical ability. But it could take a sizeable fee to pry the 20-year-old away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which Millwall may not be able to afford.
