Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Keeley is closing in on a permanent move to League One side Luton Town.
The 22-year-old has been unable to agree a new contract with Spurs and is now expected to leave the club following a standout season on loan at Leyton Orient.
Luton Set to Land Talented Spurs Stopper
Keeley impressed last season with 16 clean sheets in League One and a remarkable headed goal in the FA Cup against Oldham. He was instrumental in helping Orient reach the play-off final and earned widespread acclaim, including from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after a narrow FA Cup defeat. Guardiola said Keeley was “really, really good” in the tie and acknowledged his performance as a key factor in keeping City at bay.
Despite those performances, Keeley has found a pathway to Tottenham’s first team blocked. Guglielmo Vicario remains the number one, with Antonin Kinsky and Brandon Austin also tied to long-term deals. The arrival of Thomas Frank as head coach has not altered Keeley’s prospects, and Spurs have now accepted a deal in principle to sell.
Talks over a new contract had taken place earlier this summer, but no agreement was reached. Luton have now moved to secure the player permanently, and he is expected to meet the club in the coming days to finalise terms.

Spurs Insert Sell-On Clause but Opt Against Buy-Back
Tottenham will retain a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, believing Keeley could reach Premier League level in the future. However, a buy-back option is not expected to be included.
A further complication in Keeley’s Spurs career was his UEFA registration status. Despite spending three years at the club after joining from St Patrick’s Athletic, he does not qualify as homegrown for European competition. That disadvantage made it even harder to leapfrog Austin, who does meet the criteria.
Keeley has already represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level and earned a senior call-up at the end of last season. His performances caught the eye not just domestically but internationally, and he has trained this summer under new goalkeeper coach Fabian Otte.
Writer’s View
Josh Keeley’s move to Luton Town feels like the right step at the right time. His development has outpaced the opportunities available at Spurs, and with three senior keepers ahead of him, there was little chance of meaningful first-team football.
Luton offer a realistic chance of minutes, continued development, and a platform to push for more senior Republic of Ireland caps. Spurs clearly still believe in his potential, but Keeley needs to play regularly to realise it. This could be one of the more quietly smart signings in League One this summer.
