Hull City Thwarted In Attempts To Sign 28-Year-Old

Hull City’s bid to sign free agent striker Oli McBurnie has been blocked by the EFL.

The 28-year-old had been lined up as a marquee addition by the Tigers, but financial constraints imposed by the league have put a stop to the move before it could progress.

McBurnie Deal Halted as EFL Intervenes

Hull City were keen to bring in McBurnie following his release from Las Palmas, where he spent last season after leaving Sheffield United. The striker had also attracted interest from Birmingham City and was reportedly on the radar for a return to Bramall Lane. However, journalist Barry Cooper has stated that the EFL has vetoed Hull’s attempt to land the Scotland international.

Speaking on The 1904 Club YouTube channel, Cooper revealed that Hull were willing to meet McBurnie’s wage expectations, but were ultimately prevented from doing so due to restrictions:

“We know they’ve already put a stop to McBurnie… City at one point were prepared to pay that. The EFL said no.”

The news is a blow to head coach Sergej Jakirovic, who was appointed earlier this summer to replace Ruben Selles following his departure to Sheffield United. The club has made moves in the transfer market, adding goalkeeper Dillon Phillips from Rotherham United and defender Semi Ajayi from West Bromwich Albion. However, attacking reinforcements remain a priority.

Experienced Frontman Now Weighing Up Options

McBurnie is currently assessing his next step after leaving Las Palmas following their relegation from La Liga. A return to English football remains likely, with interest from the Championship continuing despite the collapse of Hull’s approach.

The Glasgow-born striker began his senior career with Bradford City before rising to prominence at Swansea City, where he scored 26 goals in 62 games. His spell at Sheffield United brought 29 goals in 159 appearances, including a key role during their time in the Premier League.

Loan stints at Newport County, Bristol Rovers and Barnsley also helped him gain experience across the EFL. A total of 16 international caps with Scotland further underline his pedigree, making him one of the most experienced free agents currently available.

Writer’s View

This is a frustrating development for Hull City, who saw McBurnie as a statement signing to lead their frontline. The club’s ambitions under new leadership are clearly bold, but restrictions remain a major obstacle. The EFL’s intervention not only blocks a proven Championship striker from joining the squad but also raises further questions about Hull’s financial flexibility ahead of the new season.

McBurnie, meanwhile, still has plenty to offer and will no doubt find another suitor soon. For the Tigers, the challenge is now to pivot quickly and secure alternative firepower before the campaign begins.
