Reading Take Former Wales Midfielder On Trial

Joe Morrell has made his long-awaited return to action – in Reading colours.

The former Portsmouth midfielder featured as a trialist in the Royals’ goalless pre-season draw against Gillingham, marking his first public appearance in 18 months.

Former World Cup Star Resurfaces With Royals

Reading supporters were quick to spot the 28-year-old Wales international at Priestfield on Saturday, watching the first half from the stands in a club-branded t-shirt before being introduced as ‘Trialist B’ for the second period.

Morrell replaced a fellow midfielder on the hour mark and completed the final 30 minutes of Noel Hunt’s side’s clash with the League Two outfit. It marked a significant personal milestone for the ex-Luton Town man, who last played competitive football in January 2024, during Portsmouth’s 2–2 draw with Oxford United.

The central midfielder suffered a serious knee injury in that fixture, with cartilage damage requiring surgery and ruling him out for the remainder of the 2023–24 campaign. Despite being part of a League One title-winning squad, Morrell endured a lengthy and frustrating road to recovery.

Further complications – including a gym setback last summer and arthrofibrosis in January – halted his rehabilitation, and his time at Fratton Park came to an end when Portsmouth opted against renewing his contract.

Reading Hand Morrell A Chance To Reignite Career

Reading’s decision to hand Morrell a trial opportunity is a clear sign that the club is exploring experienced options ahead of the new season. With Hunt overseeing a period of squad transition, the 28-year-old offers proven quality and leadership at this level.

Morrell made 105 appearances for Portsmouth after joining from Luton in 2021 and was also part of Wales’ squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, the past 18 months have tested his resilience, as he recently explained in a candid interview with *The Guardian*.

“I care about football so much, it has been unbelievably tough. I had quite a bad disciplinary record – that’s a stick I’ve been beaten with – but I’ve joked to some of the lads this year: ‘What I’d give now to be sent off, I’d snap your hand off’.

“Portsmouth lost 6-1 at Stoke and I’m watching it thinking: ‘I’d love to be on that pitch now.’ It probably shows you how low I’ve been. People tweet you to say you played rubbish – I kind of miss that in a sense.”

Writer’s View

This is exactly the sort of low-risk, high-upside move Reading have become adept at exploring in recent windows. Morrell’s technical ability, international pedigree, and EFL experience make him a smart option—particularly as a free agent.

The key now is whether his body can withstand the demands of a League One campaign. If he does come through unscathed, he could be an astute addition who adds depth, calmness, and quality to the Royals’ midfield engine room.
