Norwich City Open £20 Million Transfer Talks

Norwich City have entered into transfer talks with Burnley and Wolfsburg over the potential sale of striker Josh Sargent, according to journalist Anthony Joseph.

The 25-year-old joined the Canaries from German outfit Werder Bremen in 2021 for a fee believed to be around £8 million. Although he initially struggled to adapt to the vigour of the Premier League, their relegation to the Championship offered him a chance to shine.

Sargent has hit double figures in the league in each of the past three seasons. It’s this form that saw him put pen to paper on a new five year deal in October 2023.

Last season, the United States international formed a formidable attack alongside Borja Sainz, contributing 42 goals and assists between them. This saw the duo both land spots in the 2024/25 Championship Team of the Season. Despite that, Norwich underwhelmed overall, eventually finishing in the bottom half of the table in 13th.

Norwich Stand Firm On Asking Price

Following their escapades last season, it was inevitable that Sargent and Sainz would attract interest this summer. The latter has already departed Carrow Road, joining Portuguese giants FC Porto yesterday for a fee of £14.25 million.

His former teammate is expected to follow suit and has already caught the attention of a host of clubs. AS Roma have been linked to his signature, with Burnley and Wolfsburg also keen.

It has been claimed today that talks have begun, although the East Anglians have set an asking price of £20 million. So far, that valuation hasn’t been met.

The striker featured at the weekend in a pre-season friendly against Northampton Town, completing 45 minutes. Speaking afterwards, new boss Liam Manning addressed the situation:

“Josh is a top player, right? You see that. You see what he’s done in the division. But the consequences of that, naturally, are you’re going to be linked with clubs at a higher level. We have to see how that pans out. I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s applied himself in training and how he’s gone about it. It was good to see him get 45 as well.”

Norwich remain in a strong position, with Sargent under contract until 2028.

Writer’s View

Despite his high valuation, it does still seem likely that Josh Sargent will depart Norwich City this summer. The Canaries are right to stand firm with their valuation, but the truth is that he could eventually leave for just short of their asking price. Still, attracting over £30 million for two players could do wonders for their promotion ambitions next season if it is reinvested wisely into the squad. Therefore, it is in their interests to get this deal done sooner rather than later.
