Kevin Nolan is stepping up Northampton Town’s recruitment push with just weeks to go until the League One opener.
The former Notts County boss wants additions through the spine of the side and could make multiple signings before the window closes.
Nolan Eyes Core Strength Before Big Kick-Off
Cobblers manager Nolan has confirmed he is actively seeking to bolster his squad across several key areas ahead of the 2025/26 League One campaign. Despite a busy summer of activity already, Nolan is far from finished, particularly when it comes to strengthening the team’s central spine.
Speaking ahead of the season’s final build-up, Nolan made it clear that the recruitment team is focused on quality over quantity, but that several positions remain a priority. Top of the list is a striker, with attacking reinforcements deemed essential following limited options in the final third. However, Nolan also revealed he’s looking to bring in at least one more central midfielder and potentially two defensive options, including a centre-back and possibly another left-back.
“I want to strengthen all through the centre of the pitch and especially the spine of the team,” said Nolan. “I want to add all over the pitch and we’re working hard to do that but, as we’ve said all along, we will only sign the right players.”
His plans come despite the club already securing three midfield signings this summer. The long-term absence of Liam Shaw has left the squad lighter in that department, and Nolan is keen to ensure depth and resilience as the new season approaches.
Nolan, appointed in January, has consistently stressed the importance of character and commitment in his signings. That mantra remains a cornerstone of this transfer window, and he insists the club will walk away from any deal where the player isn’t fully on board with the project.
“I’ve said many times that we want people who want to be here and they have to be 110 per cent all in because we’re trying to push the boundaries,” he added. “We’re getting the group fitter and stronger and we’re pushing them to be in a better shape, both mentally and physically, than where we were last season.”
The Cobblers’ preparations continue at pace, with fitness and conditioning being pushed hard during pre-season. Nolan’s ambition to evolve Northampton into a more robust and competitive League One side is clearly driving an intense approach on and off the pitch.

Writer’s View
Kevin Nolan’s transfer policy is focused, firm, and clearly rooted in a long-term vision for Northampton Town. While fans may be hoping for swift action in the forward department, Nolan’s emphasis on the right attitude is a welcome sign of joined-up thinking at Sixfields.
A new centre-forward may be the headline need, but the broader approach—ensuring balance across defence and midfield—is a smart one. With fitness standards also being raised, the Cobblers could surprise a few when the new season gets underway.
