Huddersfield Town are preparing a £750,000 bid for Bolton Wanderers captain George Thomason.
The 24-year-old midfielder is attracting serious interest from their League One rivals despite leading Wanderers in a pre-season win over Orlando Pirates on Friday.
Thomason Interest Grows As Bolton Consider Midfield Restructure
Bolton are bracing themselves for an official approach from Huddersfield Town, who are reportedly keen to test their resolve for a player considered a mainstay at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Thomason is currently the club’s longest-serving outfield player and has taken on the captain’s armband in pre-season, but uncertainty around his future has grown following the signing of Xavier Simons from Hull City.
The situation has been further complicated by Bolton’s pursuit of Swedish midfielder Jesper Ceesay, which appears to have collapsed after agent Blash Hosseini claimed the player was only interested in “bigger clubs” despite a fee being agreed with IFK Norrköping. Wanderers are expected to turn their attention to other targets, with one foreign-based slot still available in their squad.
Thomason famously turned down a £1 million move to Bristol City in August 2023, choosing to remain with Bolton. However, with manager Steven Schumacher now prioritising a new striker, Wanderers could look to cash in on the midfielder to help fund attacking reinforcements. The club already have Aaron Morley, Josh Sheehan and rising prospect Sonny Sharples-Ahmed in central midfield.
Meanwhile, another potential departure is centre-back Will Forrester, who has been linked with Stockport County should they sell Ethan Pye. Forrester is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury but impressed under Schumacher before his setback, starting 14 of 16 games prior to April. A shift to a back four has increased competition in central defence, with George Johnston, Chris Forino, Rich Taylor, Eoin Toal, and Sam Inwood all available. Bolton are also thought to be eyeing an experienced addition in that area.
Wanderers have already moved on Luke Southwood and Aaron Collins this summer, and made Klaidi Lolos and Dan Nlundulu available for transfer as Schumacher moulds the squad to fit his new tactical blueprint.

Writer’s View
George Thomason has been a reliable figure at Bolton since arriving from Longridge Town in 2020, but his future could now hinge on the club’s priorities in the transfer market. With Schumacher reshaping the squad around a fresh system, cashing in on a high-value asset like Thomason may offer flexibility to address more pressing areas.
That said, letting go of the captain—even amid growing depth in midfield—would be a bold move. Huddersfield’s interest is a real test of Bolton’s ambition this season, and if a deal is struck, the pressure will be on to ensure that any reinvestment pays off quickly.
