Ipswich Town are closing in on their first major outfield additions of the summer, with deals for Cedric Kipré and Azor Matusiwa reportedly nearing completion.
The Tractor Boys look set to strengthen both defence and midfield as they prepare for a return to Championship action under Kieran McKenna.
Promotion Clause Tied to Kipré Deal
Town’s only confirmed arrival so far has been experienced goalkeeper David Button, but momentum is building behind two high-profile signings from Ligue 1. Defender Cedric Kipré is understood to have arrived in Suffolk on Thursday to finalise a loan move from Reims. Reports indicate the deal includes a conditional obligation to buy—if Ipswich achieve promotion, a £3.9 million permanent transfer will be triggered.
The 28-year-old has extensive experience in English football, having previously played for West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic, and Cardiff City. Kipré made 34 appearances for Reims last season in a campaign that ended in relegation from France’s top tier.
French outlet L’Équipe has also reported that Ipswich have agreed a fee in the region of £9.9 million to sign Rennes midfielder Azor Matusiwa. The 27-year-old is expected to make a permanent move to Portman Road pending final negotiations and a medical.
Matusiwa joined Rennes from Reims during the 2024 January window and featured regularly, clocking up 31 appearances with one goal and four assists. The Amsterdam-born midfielder, capped at youth level for the Netherlands, came through Ajax’s academy and is known for his ball-winning ability and engine in the middle of the park.
If both deals are completed, they would represent a clear statement of intent from Ipswich, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion last season and are keen to go one better in 2025–26.

Writer’s View
Ipswich Town have been relatively quiet in the market up until now, but these two deals—if concluded—suggest a significant shift in ambition. Cedric Kipré is a seasoned Championship defender, strong in the air and capable of playing in a high line, which suits Kieran McKenna’s system. The loan-to-buy structure offers financial flexibility while retaining promotion incentives.
Azor Matusiwa, meanwhile, could prove a game-changer. At £9.9 million, he wouldn’t just be Ipswich’s record signing—he’d also become one of the most high-profile arrivals across the division this summer. His background at Ajax and top-tier experience in France add pedigree, while his energy and composure could be vital in unlocking stubborn defences.
For a club aiming to bridge the gap to the Premier League, these are the right types of signings—experienced, athletic, and with resale potential. Ipswich fans may have had to wait, but the club’s summer is finally warming up.
