Reading Set To Agree Premier League Loan

Reading could make another statement signing this summer as reports suggest they are close to confirming a deal for Mark O’Mahony.

This summer has already been a massive success for The Royals with Dai Yongge now ousted from the club and Rob Couhig now in control. They have already sealed three transfers so far this summer, the most prominent of which was a deal for Lincoln City’s Paudie O’Connor alongside Hull City‘s Matty Jacob and goalkeeper Jack Stevens.

Medical Confirmed

According to Football League World, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Mark O’Mahony has a medical scheduled to join the Berkshire club on a season-long loan, beating multiple League One clubs to this signature. Reports last week stated that Leyton Orient, Barnsley and Plymouth Argyle were all in the chase for the 20-year-old, with all three clubs in need of new forwards this summer.

O’Mahony made his first loan move last summer for Portsmouth in the Championship, but struggled to thrive in the division and was ultimately replaced by Colby Bishop in the starting lineup after his early recovery from heart surgery. He ultimately made 13 appearances for Pompey across the season, scoring three times in a campaign that was marked by multiple injury worries.

Reading have seen attacking players depart this window, with Jayden Wareham departing to League One rivals Exeter City and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan’s contract expiring last week. Noel Hunt’s side will look to break into the League One playoffs this season, after falling narrowly short last season which saw a midseason manager change as Ruben Selles departed for Hull City.

Writers’ View

After limited action at Portsmouth, a step down in a division for Mark O’Mahony should give him the game time he needs to prove his worth to Brighton and Hove Albion. Reading is a brilliant destination, with optimism rife in Berkshire following the ownership change alongside key contract renewals and new signings. Mahony of course had injury issues at Fratton Park so if he can remain fit, he could be a great player to fill the void left behind by Sam Smith following his winter move to Wrexham.
