New Club Emerges In Watford Striker Chase

Watford could be outflanked in their race to sign Alexandre Mendy as a new club has emerged trying to sign the striker.

The Hornets are back in rebuild mode with the sacking of Tom Cleverley following the conclusion of the season, and have since appointed Italian boss Paulo Pezzolano to lead the Vicarage Road side into next season. They have made five signings so far, including Hector Kyprianou on a free transfer from Peterborough United and goalkeeper Nathan Baxter from Bolton Wanderers.

Watford Could Lose Out

Whilst the Hertfordshire club have already agreed a deal for striker Vivaldo Semedo from sister club Udinese, they are still in the market for another forward in Caen talisman Alexandre Mendy. The 31-year-old is in his final year at Caen in Ligue 2 and L’Equipe have stated that Watford are in talks to sign the Guinea-Bissau international earlier this week.

Mendy is no stranger to Championship headlines, having been the subject of an intense transfer chase by Sunderland in the final stages of the previous summer window. The Black Cats failed to sign him, instead opting to loan in Wilson Isidor from Zenit St. Petersburg and played a pivotal role in their promotion through the playoffs this season.

According to French Journalist Josue Casse, Montpellier have now entered the race for Mendy, and the 31-year-old is interested in the project of the two-time Coupe De France winners who were relegated from the top-flight last season. It also stated that Watford are still yet to offer a deal to Caen for the striker.

12 months after dominating the headlines for his failed move to Sunderland, Alexandre Mendy could yet again have a move to England fall apart in front of him. The 31-year-old’s goal record is strong with 75 goals in 175 games for Caen, and Watford do need goal scorers with only Vakoun Bayo recording double digits in the league. However, with Montpellier entering the race, The Hornets are now on the back foot and will have to act fast if they want to sign a second striker alongside Vivaldo Semedo.
