Latest Sheffield United recruit Tyler Bindon has revealed the chance of reuniting with Ruben Selles played a key part in his decision to join the Blades.
The 20-year-old headed to Yorkshire on a season-long deal yesterday, joining from Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest. Bindon is yet to feature for his parent club having signed a deal until 2028 in February this year.
The two-time European champions acquired the centre-back’s services from League One outfit Reading, whom he had previously represented since 2023. He was immediately loaned back for the remainder of the campaign and won the club’s Player of the Season.
It was Selles that had brought the New Zealand international to England from the United States during his time in charge of the Royals. He became a staple of the Spaniard’s team, making 91 appearances in all competitions.
Bindon Hoping To Learn More From Selles
Sheffield United’s rumoured interest in Bindon emerged at the end of last month. It was an easy link to make after Selles was named as Chris Wilder’s successor following his departure from Hull City at the end of last season.
Speaking upon the official announcement, the defender admitted he is eager to carry on learning from his former boss:
“I’m very grateful to be here and it is amazing I get this opportunity. Rubén is a great person and coach, and I feel I can still learn so much more from him, it will be special to do that here at United.
“I’m always looking forward to any new challenge in football. The game has always been big in my family with my mum playing for New Zealand when I was growing up. I fell in love with the game and my dad is passionate about it too, so it has always been in my life.
“I’ll always be grateful to have the opportunity to play professionally and represent my whole family.”
Writer’s View
The move to Sheffield United represents Tyler Bindon’s first opportunity to play in the Championship. Whilst some supporters may deem this move as a risk, the 20-year-old looked a cut above in League One and should make the transition to the second tier with ease. Furthermore, he joins one of the division’s best defences, with only last season’s top two conceding less during the 2024/25 campaign. This is a great signing for the Blades and one that offers Bindon an excellent opportunity to stake his claim for a chance with his parent club next year.
