Wycombe Wanderers See Bid Rejected For Top Target

Wycombe Wanderers have seen a bold move for Barnsley captain Luca Connell knocked back by the League One side.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has grown into a key figure at Oakwell, is now the subject of serious interest from a fellow third-tier rival.

Wycombe Must Improve Offer To Land Barnsley Midfield General

Mike Dodds’ side are reportedly keen to bolster their promotion credentials by targeting Connell, a player who made 46 appearances in all competitions last season and clocked over 3,600 minutes. However, Barnsley have rebuffed what has been described as a “substantial and surprising” offer, and remain firm in their valuation.

Connell, who began his senior career with Bolton Wanderers, earned a move to Celtic in 2019 before eventually joining Barnsley on a free transfer in 2022. Despite never making a senior appearance for the Scottish giants, he gained vital experience during two productive loan spells at Queen’s Park, helping the club earn back-to-back promotions. Since his switch to Barnsley, he has not only become an automatic starter but was named club captain in August 2024.

The Irish midfielder’s contract runs until 2027, giving the Tykes strong leverage in negotiations. Sources suggest that unless Wycombe are willing to table an offer in excess of £1 million, Barnsley will not entertain discussions.

Connell’s influence at Oakwell has grown significantly since his arrival. With over 100 appearances for the club, he remains central to their plans heading into the new season. Barnsley’s decision to hand him the armband last year only underlines their long-term faith in him, particularly with ambitions of returning to the Championship.

Wycombe Ambition

From Wycombe’s perspective, their pursuit indicates clear ambition. The Chairboys narrowly missed out on promotion last term, and Connell is seen as the kind of player who can elevate the midfield and bring leadership qualities to the squad. His ability to dictate play from deep and contribute defensively could help fill a crucial gap in the team.

Still, prising him away from South Yorkshire will be no easy task. Barnsley have no need to sell, and with Connell having committed his future to the club until 2027, Wycombe may need to reconsider their approach—or look elsewhere.

Writer’s View

This feels like a statement of intent from Wycombe Wanderers, but also a reality check. Luca Connell is a top-end League One midfielder, already leading a side with serious aspirations of their own. If Wycombe are truly serious about securing his services, it will take more than just ambition—it will require a significant financial commitment.

Given Barnsley’s strong negotiating position, this saga could be more about posturing than progress. Still, it’s no surprise to see Connell attracting attention—his steady rise has made him one of the division’s most dependable midfielders.
