Stockport County have announced they have signed Malik Mothersille on a three-year contract.
The Peterborough United standout was a leading light in an otherwise poor season for Posh, scoring 12 goals and assisting nine times in 45 league appearances as Darren Ferguson’s side finished 18th in League One. He recorded 26 goal contributions in all competitions, bringing his total up to 37 since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea.
County Break Record
The club announced the deal to sign Mothersille on their official website, revealing that the deal to bring the 21-year-old to Edgeley Park has broken the club transfer record set in 1998 when they signed Ian Moore for a fee of £800,000. He joins less than a day after the announcement that Isaac Olaofe has left to join Charlton Athletic, in a fee believed to value £1.5 million.
Speaking on the transfer, Hatters manager Dave Challinor said:
“Attracting Malik to the Club is a massive positive. He was a player that was on our list, but we thought that not reaching the Championship last season may have scuppered any hopes we had. This represents a big investment from the Club into what we feel is one of the brightest prospects in the EFL.
“He had a breakout season at Peterborough last season with the amount of games he played, and the goals and goal involvements that he had, and with Tanto moving on it was imperative that we replaced those goals and the penetrating pace in behind defences.
“Malik will absolutely do that, be that from a wide, central or slightly deeper area. At 21, he has huge potential and we are delighted that he’s chosen us to be the next step in his career. It’s important we get him integrated as quickly as possible and amongst the group, to give him the best chance to show the best version of himself from day one.”
Writers’ View
There is nobody better to replace Isaac Olaofe than Malik Mothersille. The 21-year-old lit League One alight at points last season, and alongside Kwame Poku, was a major reason why Peterborough United avoided an improbable relegation. This is a big coup for Stockport County, considering how high he could have moved this window. Peterborough United’s knack of finding new talent will be able to replace Mothersille, with links to Kelly Nmai lingering but may be beaten to the punch by Preston North End or Middlesbrough following Salford rejecting a Bolton Wanderers bid.
