Burton Albion have loaned out defender Alex Bannon to League of Ireland side Derry City.
The Scottish player joined The Brewers in 2024 and has made a total of 12 appearances for the club, but has failed to fully break into the first team. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish Championship side Airdrieonians, making 16 appearances as they reached the playoffs.
Derry Announce Deal
The Irish club announced the deal to sign Bannon on a season-long loan, with The Candystripes in the middle of their league season. Currently, Derry are in second place in the league, nine points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers with two games in hand on the Dublin club. They play their next match on Friday against Waterford.
Speaking to the club about the deal to bring in Bannon, City manager Tiernan Lynch said:
“He’s a young lad with plenty of senior experience under his belt. He can play in a number of different positions and someone we are looking forward to getting in and working with.”
“He can play right side centre half, right wing back, right back or even as a six.”
“He’s a very versatile lad and the big attraction to us is the number of senior games. He is someone that we definitely feel that can come in and make an impact. No one should be safe and everyone should know that when they come in on the Monday morning they have a fight on their hands.”
Writers’ View
Alex Bannon’s loan moves continued and this time he will get a longer move to Derry City. His season will run to November with The Candystripes, giving him plenty of experience with a club looking to be in the middle of a title fight in the League of Ireland. Unfortunately Derry will not be playing in Europe this month after failing to obtain a license following Drohdega’s removal from the competition, but nevertheless he will get valuable game time. With his versatility in defence, perhaps this will be his final move before returning to Burton’s first team in the future.
