Middlesbrough Snap Up Stopper From Championship Rivals

Owen Foster has joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer after parting ways with Hull City earlier this summer.

The 20-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at the Riverside Stadium after impressing on trial during the 2024/25 season. It’s a move that offers the former Scunthorpe United shot-stopper a chance to revive his career at Championship level, linking up initially with Boro’s Under-23 squad.

Hull City Spell Over

Foster spent two years at Hull City but never made a senior appearance, instead taking in loan spells with Chorley, Hartlepool United and Torquay United. Despite his limited involvement at the MKM Stadium, his early promise has kept him on the radar of EFL scouts, and Boro have now taken the opportunity to bring him in on a short-term deal.

He made headlines back in 2022 when he debuted for Scunthorpe in League Two at the age of just 17, earning widespread praise for his composure and attitude. Then-manager Keith Hill famously backed him for future international honours, calling him “an unbelievable character” and “a calm and composed presence on the pitch.”

Although his development has stalled slightly since leaving Glanford Park, the potential remains. His new deal at Middlesbrough reflects a fresh start under the guidance of new boss Rob Edwards, who took over following Michael Carrick’s departure at the end of last season.

While Foster is not expected to be part of the senior goalkeeping group immediately, his presence in the development squad offers a chance to rebuild momentum. Should he impress over the next 12 months, Boro will hold the option to extend his stay further.

Writer’s View

Owen Foster’s move to Middlesbrough feels like a sensible piece of business for both club and player. At 20, he still has time on his side and the experience of a tough few years behind him. His grounding at Scunthorpe showed real promise, and while his time at Hull didn’t lead to first-team minutes, the loan moves have added valuable experience.

With Rob Edwards now shaping the future at the Riverside, this is exactly the sort of low-risk, high-upside signing that could pay off. If Foster settles and flourishes, Boro may have unearthed a long-term asset from an overlooked corner of the EFL market.
