Wrexham are closing in on an emotional homecoming deal for former Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward.
The Welsh international is expected to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of sealing a free transfer return to the club where his career began.
Ward Poised for Championship Return With Hometown Club
Wrexham’s rapid summer rebuild has already seen key additions and high-profile exits, and Phil Parkinson looks set to make another significant move by welcoming back Danny Ward. The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who started his senior career at Wrexham before joining Liverpool in 2012, is now in line for a return over a decade later.
Ward was released by Leicester City this summer after a frustrating spell largely spent as a backup. Despite being a regular for Wales at international level, he made just 29 league appearances during seven years at the King Power Stadium. His anticipated role at Wrexham would see him serve as understudy to Arthur Okonkwo, who impressed during the club’s promotion-winning campaign.
Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail has confirmed that Ward will undergo a medical ahead of signing for the newly-promoted Championship side. Although it’s understood that he will begin the season as a number two, Ward is thought to be relishing the opportunity to be part of the club’s new era under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Eye Catching Wrexham Summer
The move marks another chapter in Wrexham’s eye-catching summer. Ryan Hardie has already arrived from Plymouth Argyle, while high-profile departures have seen Paul Mullin join Wigan Athletic and Will Boyle sign for Shrewsbury Town. Ward’s return signals the club’s continued ambition to add Championship-level experience to the dressing room.
Still, questions remain over whether the Wales keeper will settle for a supporting role, especially given the departure of Mark Howard and the likely demotion of Callum Burton to third choice. With over 100 senior league games across his career, including stints with Huddersfield Town, Aberdeen and Liverpool, Ward brings valuable experience to a newly-formed goalkeeping unit.
Writer’s View
Danny Ward’s return to Wrexham is a classic feel-good story with layers of intrigue. While his arrival undoubtedly boosts the club’s profile, it’s also a move that reflects Phil Parkinson’s measured recruitment approach—prioritising depth and experience over stardust. Okonkwo remains the undisputed number one, but having a seasoned international like Ward in reserve could prove invaluable over a long Championship season.
The signing may not wow fans in the same way as a marquee outfield addition, but if Wrexham want to cement their second-tier status, smart squad-building like this will be key. Ward may not play every week, but his presence in the dressing room and on the training ground could be worth every penny.
