Watford Midfielder Subject of Premier League Interest

Burnley are leading the race to sign Watford midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze as they prepare for life back in the Premier League, as reported by SportsBoom.

The Clarets face competition from Championship duo Birmingham City and Sunderland, who are also keen on the Georgian international.

Premier League Calling For Watford Star

Chakvetadze, 25, caught the eye with his dynamic performances in the Championship last season, making 39 appearances for Watford and contributing two goals. His profile has grown further after a strong showing for Georgia at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Despite Watford’s mid-table finish, the versatile midfielder stood out with his creativity and distinctive on-field presence—often seen playing with his socks rolled down to his ankles. Comfortable operating both centrally and out wide, Chakvetadze’s flexibility has attracted serious interest from clubs across the top two divisions.

Burnley, newly promoted to the Premier League, are understood to be leading the pursuit. However, both Birmingham City and Sunderland remain hopeful of convincing the midfielder to remain in the Championship, where he has already proven his quality.

The former Gent man joined Watford on loan in July 2023 and made the move permanent in February 2024. He is under contract until June 2029 and carries an estimated valuation between £4–5 million. His weekly wage of around £25,000 may prove a sticking point for some second-tier clubs, but is unlikely to deter Burnley, who are better placed financially following promotion.

All three interested clubs believe Chakvetadze still has untapped potential, and his willingness to entertain offers from both Premier League and Championship sides opens the door to a tense summer battle.

“We are told Chakvetadze would be open to a move to the Premier League, but is also prepared to listen to approaches from ambitious Championship clubs,” a source told SportsBoom.

Prior to his move to England, Chakvetadze enjoyed loan spells with Hamburger SV in Germany and Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia. He has been capped 39 times by Georgia and remains a key figure for the national side.

Writer’s View

Burnley’s interest in Giorgi Chakvetadze makes perfect sense as they look to add flair and versatility to their midfield following promotion. While his wage may deter Birmingham City and Sunderland, the chance to play in the Premier League could be a decisive factor in any move.

Watford’s long contract gives them the upper hand in negotiations, but if the Clarets meet their valuation, it may be difficult to resist. Chakvetadze’s unique style and growing international pedigree suggest he could thrive at a higher level, making him a smart target for a side preparing for the top flight.
