Stevenage transfer target Murphy Cooper has admitted he is open to another loan spell after signing a new contract at parent club Queens Park Rangers.
The 23-year-old spent last season on a temporary deal at the Lamex Stadium, impressing in his 40 appearances across all competitions. The goalkeeper impressed for Boro as they secured a 14th placed finish, thanks in part to his 16 clean sheets.
Reports emerged last month that manager Alex Revill is keen to being him back to the club next season, although it was claimed they were to be rivalled by Bolton Wanderers. However, the Trotters announced the signing of Chelsea shotstopper Teddy Sharman-Lowe on a season-long deal last week, seemingly giving Stevenage a clear run at the deal.
Cooper Sets Long Term Aim
Cooper rose through the ranks at Loftus Road and made his debut against Preston North End in 2022. He has featured just twice for the Hoops but was given his first taste of regular EFL action with Swindon Town during the 2023/24 campaign. However, his time in Wiltshire was cut short due to injury.
His form at Stevenage last season has convinced QPR to tie him down to a new deal, the youngster reflected on his time at Stevenage. Speaking to official club media, he said:
“I really enjoyed my time at Stevenage and it was probably the best season I’ve had so far – the highest level I’ve played at, too.
“I played 40 games, kept quite a few clean sheets and put in some good performances, so it was brilliant for me. It was a great squad, good management and I really fitted in well and enjoyed my time there. I’m really happy with how my season went.”
Continuing, he admitted he would be open to another loan spell as he continues his long-term aim of nailing down the number one spot in West London:
“It’s just about bridging the gap to eventually be the number one here. I just need to keep going, keep playing and keep improving.”
Writer’s View
Cooper was excellent between the sticks at Stevenage last season and its little surprise that they would love to see him return. This could be a smart move for all parties concerned, with QPR perhaps gaining the most benefit. It is a transfer which would see their academy graduate continue to play regularly at a decent level, whilst the familiar surroundings would certainly be a boost to his development. However, the Hoops may want to test him at a higher level, perhaps a club expected to challenge at the top end of League One or the bottom end of the Championship.
