Bromley Striker Hands In Transfer Request

League Two golden boot winner Michael Cheek has handed in a transfer request in at Bromley, according to Richard Cawley.

The 33-year-old scored an impressive 25 goals in his first season in the EFL last season for newly promoted Bromley, who comfortably finished 11th in League Two under manager Andy Woodman, in what was also the club’s first EFL season.

The London-based side now face a huge blow, potentially losing star striker Cheek after six seasons at the club.

A Host of Clubs Interested

According to Football League World, League One side Wigan Athletic are thought to be one of the many sides interested in Cheek, who will no doubt have plenty of admirers following his 25-goal season.

He certainly won’t be short of options following his 25-goal season in his first-ever season of playing in the EFL, for a team who were tipped for relegation following their promotion from the National League.

With Cheek’s age, it’s clear he wants to enjoy the rest of his playing career potentially playing at a higher level, with both League One and League Two clubs expected to be interested in signing the 33-year-old.

Impressive Records In Front of Goal

Although he is getting to the later stages of his career, Cheek is still a reliable goalscorer who has proved both this season and over multiple seasons that he can find the net, whatever level he is playing at. He has over 150 goals at National League level, and scored 25 goals in just one campaign in League Two last season.

The Englishman last signed a contract extension in 2023, and has made over 250 appearances for the Ravens in his six-year spell. scoring 118 goals and providing a further 16 assists.

On top of this, he also proved he could score goals at other clubs, scoring 35 goals in 90 appearances at former club Braintree Town and 16 in 40 at Ebsfleet Town.

His time at Dagenham and Redbridge wasn’t as successful as other spells, but he still scored 13 times in 34 appearances for the Daggers.

Writer’s View

Although this transfer request is understandable, you can understand if anyone from a Bromley perspective felt aggrieved by this decision. Cheek is a player who has been at the club for six years and was given a new chance at Hayes Lane, and for the player to have one good season and turn around and hand in a transfer request might be viewed as a nasty kick in the teeth for some.

However, from the 33-year-old’s perspective, he is nearing the end of his playing career, which, for footballers, is always short, meaning he’ll want to earn any money he can to support his family before he retires. At the end of the day, football is a business, where money is sadly priortised.
