Burton Albion Confirm Six-Goal Player Exit

Burton Albion have confirmed that Jón Dadi Bödvarsson will leave the club after his contract expired this summer, bringing an end to his short but memorable spell with the Brewers.

The 33-year-old Iceland international joined the club from Wrexham in January and wasted no time making an impression. On his first start under new manager Gary Bowyer, he scored in a crucial 2-1 win away at Wigan Athletic – Bowyer’s first victory in charge. Bödvarsson quickly followed that up with goals against Rotherham United and Reading, helping Burton record three straight league wins for the first time since October 2023.

He went on to make 13 appearances for the club in total, adding a fourth goal in a 2-1 home victory over Cambridge United. His contributions proved vital in Burton’s battle for League One survival and offered leadership during a difficult campaign.

“After some long consideration for a while now, I’ve decided along with my family to move back home after almost 10 years in England, 13 years abroad in total,” Bödvarsson said in an emotional farewell. “You’ll always have a special place in my heart. A big thanks to the players, staff and most importantly, you fans.”

Impressive English Career

Bödvarsson’s impact at Burton may have been brief, but his experience and professionalism were evident throughout. His career in English football stretches back to 2016 when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers following a standout Euro 2016 tournament with Iceland. That summer, he scored in a group stage win over Austria and provided an assist in Iceland’s famous 2-1 victory over England in the Round of 16—an iconic moment in the country’s football history.

After moving to Wolves, he spent the next decade in English football, featuring for Reading, Millwall, Bolton Wanderers, and Wrexham before arriving at Burton. Across his time in the EFL, Bödvarsson made over 250 appearances and recorded 40 goals and 17 assists, becoming a reliable and respected forward across both the Championship and League One.

His departure now leaves Burton with a gap to fill in attack ahead of the 2025/26 season, but his farewell message underscores the professionalism and humility that defined his career. The club has thanked Bödvarsson for his efforts and wished him well in his return to Iceland.

Writer’s View

While Bödvarsson’s spell at Burton was short-lived, his influence was immediate and meaningful. His arrival coincided with a crucial upturn in form, and his experience proved invaluable in guiding a struggling side to safety. More than just a reliable goalscorer, Bödvarsson brought leadership and composure—qualities that will be missed.

His decision to return home is entirely understandable after over a decade abroad, and he leaves England with his reputation intact. For Burton, replacing his presence will be difficult, but Bowyer’s recruitment so far suggests the club is already preparing for the next chapter.
