Max Power Makes Bradford City Promotion Admission

Max Power has confirmed his move to Bradford City was largely contingent on the club achieving promotion to League One — something sealed thanks to Antoni Sarcevic’s dramatic winner on the final day.

Speaking to the Telegraph and Argus, the midfielder revealed that talks had taken place prior to season’s end, but no deal was agreed until after City’s fate was confirmed.

The 30-year-old left Danish side Aarhus this summer, returning to England after a spell abroad. He said:

“I’d be lying if I said I wanted to come back and play in League Two, that was never the case, so the fact the club got promoted certainly helped things.”

Graham Alexander moved quickly to make Power his first signing as permanent manager, leveraging a long-standing mutual respect and the player’s previous working relationship with Bradford chief executive David Sharpe. The trio had shared success together at Wigan, with Power describing Alexander as someone who was “on the same page” from their very first conversation.

Ready to Lead, Eager to Compete

While some may assume Power has been brought in to directly replace outgoing captain Richie Smallwood, the new arrival was keen to avoid such comparisons. Instead, he stressed the importance of earning his place and contributing both on and off the pitch.

“Every player has got to earn the right to keep their shirt and warrant playing, so like everyone else, I want to impress as much as I can in pre-season,” he said.

Despite his seniority and leadership credentials, Power made it clear he expects to be judged by performances and effort. Describing himself as a “passionate lad” and someone who “wants to win every game in training,” the midfielder is targeting a strong start to pre-season as he aims to set standards for the group.

His arrival coincides with a broader summer of change at Valley Parade. Smallwood’s surprise exit left a leadership void in midfield, and while Power may fill it in spirit and style, he was clear that those discussions with the manager are still to come.

Writer’s View

Max Power’s signing may prove to be one of the most astute deals of Bradford City’s summer. His comments underline just how crucial promotion was — not only for morale and momentum, but for attracting players of Power’s calibre.

Graham Alexander appears to have struck the right tone with the 30-year-old, whose leadership, drive, and League One experience could fill the gap left by Richie Smallwood while also raising standards throughout the squad. If Power’s words translate into performances, Bantams fans could be looking at a key figure in their push for a top-half finish — or better.
