Cardiff City have finally put an end to their managerial search by naming Brian Barry-Murphy as their new head coach on a three-year deal.
It’s been almost two months since the Bluebirds opted to part company with Omer Riza, who left with the club on the brink of relegation from the Championship. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey was put in interim charge for the remainder of the campaign but he was unable to halt the slide and the Welsh-based outfit eventually finished bottom of the table.
With life in League One on the horizon, they were determined to get the next appointment right and issued a statement last week claiming the next appointment is one of the ‘most important in Cardiff City’s recent history’.
That press release coincided with growing reports that Leicester City coach Barry-Murphy was set to land the position, beating the likes of Ramsey, Ian Evatt and Des Buckingham to the role.
Vincent Tan Reveals Reasons For Appointment
The 46-year-old has little experience in the hot seat, with his only managerial experience coming at Rochdale between 2019 and 2021. However, he has built a stellar reputation in the years that have followed, first as academy manager at Manchester City then as first team coach at Leicester City.
Speaking to official club media, owner Vincent Tan revealed this was one of the key reasons why the new head coach stood out above other candidates:
“I’d like to welcome Brian to Cardiff City Football Club. We are delighted that he has agreed to become Head Coach.
“Throughout the interview process, Brian showed a huge passion for our Club because he believes in what we’re trying to do. He knows this level having played and managed at this standard before, where he was noted for his style of play. Since then, he has only gone from strength-to-strength as a leader.
“He’s got a proven track record in youth development having coached some of the brightest young prospects in the UK, many of whom are now playing at the very top of the game.
“He brings enthusiasm, vibrancy and an exciting outlook on what today’s football is, while looking to play an attacking style that our fans are sure to enjoy.
“It’s a combination of all of Brian’s great talents that make him the right man to take us forward into this next chapter.”

This move is undoubtedly a risk for Cardiff but they clearly feel they have the right man. This process has been a long one, indicating that they have covered all basis before naming their new head coach. Still, Barry-Murphy has earned plaudits for the work he did at Manchester City in particular, playing a key role in the development of players such as Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly and Oscar Bobb. If he can translate that to his new club, they could be on to a winner.
