Portsmouth Move For Youth International Amid Defensive Reshape

Portsmouth have joined the race to sign former Norwich City defender Jonathan Tomkinson as they begin to reshape their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

The 23-year-old, who holds youth caps for the United States, became a free agent this month after leaving Carrow Road. Despite limited senior opportunities with the Canaries—just three first-team appearances—Tomkinson has built up valuable EFL experience during loan spells with Stevenage and Bradford City, and more recently spent half a season in Scotland with Ross County.

Pompey’s interest in Tomkinson comes amid a broader recruitment push aimed at bolstering their backline following their return to the second tier. Manager John Mousinho is understood to be keen on adding defensive depth, particularly after the club secured promotion from League One last term with one of the division’s strongest records.

Tomkinson’s time in the Scottish Premiership saw him make nine appearances during a short stint at Ross County, who were ultimately relegated via the play-offs. That run of games has reignited attention in the young defender, with Portsmouth one of four clubs credited with interest, alongside Reading, Stockport County, and Rotherham United.

Other Teams Interested

Reports suggest Reading are also in the market for central defenders, having lost Tyler Bindon and with Amadou Mbengue attracting Championship interest. However, uncertainty surrounding their summer plans could give Portsmouth a crucial edge in any potential deal.

Tomkinson originally joined Norwich’s youth ranks after being spotted in Texas and is known for his aerial presence and composure on the ball. Though his senior minutes have been limited, he’s viewed as a project player with the attributes to grow into a solid Championship-level centre-half.

The transfer window officially reopens on June 16, but Pompey are already working to get deals in place early, particularly as competition intensifies for out-of-contract players. Tomkinson’s availability on a free transfer makes him an attractive option, particularly for clubs looking to remain within EFL financial fair play guidelines.

Writer’s View

This move would fit Portsmouth’s transfer model perfectly—low-risk, high-upside, and with Championship potential. Jonathan Tomkinson may not be a marquee signing, but he’s a versatile young defender with experience across England’s lower leagues and Scotland.

With Portsmouth needing depth to compete in a tougher division, this would be a savvy addition. Beating rivals like Reading and Rotherham to his signature could also set the tone for an ambitious summer at Fratton Park.
