Reading goalkeeper Joel Pereira is set to sign a new contract with the club, snubbing Championship interest to remain at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
The 28-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to Hull City but now looks poised to commit his future to the Royals.
Pereira Stays Loyal to Royals Despite Championship Interest
Joel Pereira, who joined Reading in September 2023, has emerged as a key figure between the sticks over the past two seasons. With his current deal due to expire at the end of June, speculation had grown over his future, especially with Hull City and Wycombe Wanderers reportedly circling, alongside Portuguese side Casa Pia.
However, respected journalist Dan Marsh reported on social media that Pereira is ready to sign fresh terms with Reading. The news is a significant boost for Noel Hunt as he builds for the 2025/26 League One campaign.
Pereira made 40 appearances in all competitions last season, offering consistency and leadership in a transitional squad. A former Manchester United youth product, he also boasts experience from spells at Huddersfield Town, Rochdale, Hearts, and Dutch side RKC Waalwijk.

At the time of his arrival in 2023, then-sporting director Mark Bowen praised the keeper’s work ethic and readiness:
“Our aim during this summer’s rebuilding process has been to create strength in depth across all areas of the pitch. Joel’s recruitment gives us another option in the goalkeeping department, and during his time training with the team, he has shown a desire to work hard to meet our high standards and to push the other goalkeepers for that starting spot.”
His loyalty to the Royals, despite offers from a higher division, reflects a renewed sense of stability at the club following financial challenges and last year’s relegation. Reading’s ambition to return to the Championship has been underpinned by a recent focus on retaining key assets and rebuilding smartly under a new-look leadership team.

Writer’s View
This is a huge win for Reading. Joel Pereira had every reason to move on, with Championship clubs knocking and a contract expiry looming—but his decision to stay speaks volumes about the project under Ruben Selles.
Pereira has been a steady hand in a turbulent period for the Royals, and retaining him gives the club both experience and continuity in a pivotal position. In a summer where departures often dominate headlines, this renewal might prove as important as any new signing.
