Middlesbrough Star Emerges As Primary Transfer Target

Middlesbrough midfielder Finn Azaz has emerged as a top transfer target for FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, according to The Irish Examiner.

The 24-year-old only joined the Teessiders from Aston Villa in January 2024 but has fast surfaced as one of the first names on the team sheet at the Riverside Stadium. Although Boro missed out on a place in the play-offs last season, the Republic of Ireland international hit 23 goal contributions in 45 league outings, scoring 12 whilst assisting 11.

This has led to rumours that he could exit the North East this summer, with newly promoted Leeds United long linked with the player. Others linked to Azaz include Bournemouth and Palace.

Palace Ready To Step Up Interest

Although the Eagles are long term admirers of the player, it is claimed that they are ready to step up their pursuit over the course of the summer. Having beaten Manchester City in the FA Cup final last month, they are gearing up for a spot in the Europa League. However, their position in European football remains under threat due to a duel ownership issue alongside French outfit Lyon, who will compete in the same competition.

That aside, the Londoners remain keen and are hoping to usurp their Premier League rivals to his signature. It is claimed that Middlesbrough value their asset at €25 million, which is just over £21 million.

Azaz is currently under contract until 2028 having signed a four-and-a-half-year deal upon his arrival last year. Despite his high transfer value, Boro may struggle to keep hold of the player, who is ranked as one of the lowest earners at the Championship club.

Writer’s View

It’s highly like that Finn Azaz earns himself a move to the Premier League this summer. Having failed to break into the side at Aston Villa, he has had to carve out his reputation in League One in the Championship. He first helped Plymouth Argyle achieve over 100 points enroute to winning the League One title before moving back to Home Park the following year. His form during the first half of the campaign was enough to convince Middlesbrough to pay out £2 million for his services. Although they will be keen to retain his services, making 10 times their original outlay will soften the blow.
