Oxford United Seal Agreement With Experienced Stopper

Oxford United goalkeeper Simon Eastwood has signed a one-year contract extension ahead of his 10th season with the club.

The 35-year-old has confirmed he will remain at the Kassam Stadium until the summer of 2026 despite limited involvement last season.

Veteran Keeper Extends Stay at Oxford United

Eastwood has been a stalwart for Oxford United since returning to the club in 2016 from Blackburn Rovers, racking up 288 appearances in all competitions. Though he was not named in the matchday squads during the U’s most recent Championship campaign, his influence off the pitch remains significant.

The former Huddersfield Town academy product made just one appearance last season—back in February during a 1–1 draw against Reading—but continues to be a key figure behind the scenes. As the most experienced goalkeeper at the club, Eastwood is involved in mentoring younger talents, particularly after the arrivals of loanees such as James Beadle in recent campaigns.

He took to social media to express his appreciation, writing:

“Delighted to have extended my contract at Oxford United for another season, which will take me into my 10th season at the club. I am extremely grateful to continue to be part of the team and goalkeeping department.”

Despite falling down the pecking order in recent years, Eastwood has remained a model professional. He was once an ever-present in league and cup during the 2016–17 season and was named both the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year. Injuries and competition have since limited his game time, but his presence continues to add value to the squad’s dynamics.

Eastwood’s Long Career

Having previously played for Portsmouth and FC Halifax Town, Eastwood’s career has seen him span all tiers of English football. His two appearances for England at youth level hint at the early promise that led to his Championship stint with Blackburn.

Oxford United’s promotion to the Championship at the end of the 2023–24 season has sparked a period of consolidation. While the club continues to strengthen its squad for the demands of second-tier football, retaining experienced figures such as Eastwood suggests an emphasis on continuity and dressing-room leadership.

Writer’s View

Simon Eastwood’s contract extension may not grab headlines, but it’s an astute move from Oxford United. While his role on the pitch may now be limited, his impact behind the scenes, particularly for developing goalkeepers, can’t be understated.

At a time when newly promoted sides often undergo dramatic overhauls, keeping experienced players who understand the club’s DNA is a shrewd decision. Eastwood embodies the professionalism and stability that can help Oxford navigate the challenges of the Championship.
