Barrow AFC have wasted no time strengthening their squad ahead of the 2025/26 League Two season, announcing two new arrivals just ten days into the summer window.
Head Coach Andy Whing has moved swiftly to bring in midfielder Scott Smith from Wigan Athletic and striker Innes Cameron from Kilmarnock, both on two-year deals effective from July 1, pending EFL approval.
Scott Smith
Smith, 24, leaves Wigan after over a decade with the Latics, having come through the youth system to make 46 senior appearances last season—39 of which came in League One. A former Wales youth international, he featured prominently under Ryan Lowe and brings top-end fourth-tier experience to Holker Street. Reflecting on his move, Smith told Barrow’s official site:
“The interest I’ve had from Barrow and the way they’ve gone about it put them head and shoulders above the rest… This was the one that massively stood out to me.”
He is expected to provide energy and composure in the centre of the park as Barrow rebuild a squad that had just ten contracted players at the end of the last campaign.

Innes Cameron
Joining him is towering 6ft 3in forward Innes Cameron, who departs Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock after more than 80 senior appearances. The 24-year-old spent loan spells with Stranraer, Ayr United, Alloa Athletic, and Queen of the South before eventually becoming a regular at Rugby Park. He has featured in the Europa Conference League and arrives in Cumbria seeking a fresh start in English football.
Head Coach Whing was enthusiastic about Cameron’s signing:
“We’re delighted to get Innes on board. He’s a striker really well suited to the league, and since we first spoke to him, he’s shown a real hunger to take on a new challenge after being at Kilmarnock since he was 13.”
Barrow’s early transfer activity follows a significant squad turnover. The club released several senior players—including Sam Barnes, Paul Farman, and Dom Telford—while multiple loanees returned to their parent clubs. With Elliot Newby and David Worrall already agreeing new deals, the shape of Whing’s new-look side is beginning to take form.
Writer’s View
Andy Whing is wasting no time reshaping Barrow’s squad, and these early additions hint at a clear recruitment strategy—youthful but experienced, and hungry to impress. Scott Smith looks a shrewd acquisition, offering League One know-how and tenacity in midfield, while Innes Cameron adds physical presence and a new dynamic up front.
With several gaps still to fill, it’s a promising start for a club that will hope to build on last season’s mid-table showing and push further up the League Two ladder.
