Wealdstone Appoints Former Tottenham Hotspur Coach As Manager

Wealdstone has announced the appointment of former player and Tottenham Hotspur coach Sam Cox as their new manager, as reported on the club’s official website.

Cox replaces Neil Gibson, who kept the club in the National League last season.

Who Is Sam Cox?

Cox is a 34-year-old former versatile midfielder who started his career at Tottenham Hotspur before spending the majority of his playing time in non-league, representing clubs such as Hampton and Richmond, Boreham Wood and Wealdstone.

He captained the Grosvenor Vale side, making 80 appearances between 2016 and 2019, before returning in 2024 as the first-team coach following Stuart Maynard’s departure to Notts County. After securing National League survival, Cox departed to take the reins at Oxford City.

Cox has been capped 35 times by Guyana and has represented his nation in the Gold Cup.

Cox Thrilled To Take The Top Job

On taking the job, the former Spurs coach spoke of his delight at returning to West London.

“I’m honoured and thrilled to be back at Wealdstone in this role. When I took charge as interim, the reaction from the players, staff and supporters was incredible – and together we achieved something special.”

“I know the potential we have here and I’m determined to build on that. Our ambition is clear: create a culture of hard work, unity and continuous improvement and I’m fully committed to giving everything to see Wealdstone thrive.”

At just 34 years old, Cox is already a well-respected coach within the game and Wealdstone chairman Rory Fitzgerald is delighted to get his man.

“Sam is not only highly respected at the Stones, he is also one of the finest young coaches we have in our game. Throughout the 23/24 run in he demonstrated an ability to motivate players, demand high standards and cultivate a positive environment in the dressing room.”

“We are excited to work with him again and confident he will build a squad capable of competing in the National League.”

Having secured their National League status by the skin of their teeth in May, Wealdstone will be hoping Cox can guide them to a more comfortable finish and establish The Stones as a midtable fifth-tier side.

In spite of his, youth, Cox has experience coaching at a high level as well as working in the lower leagues and has already had a positive impact on the Wealdstone squad during his interim spell. Grosvenor Vale regulars will be hopeful Cox can inspire once again.
